Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 22, 2009 11:30 am Hi all, i'm new to this site so bear with me with the silly questions I've posted a few different questions in other posts to make it easier to get answers since i have a LOT of questions
I've been looking into possibly having a quaker barn or American barn built and modifying it into a home. It seems like it would be a lot cheaper to build than a kit home and i like the look of them but i need to weigh up the pros and cons. Fair Dinkom sheds has roughly quoted me around $39,000 to have a resonable size quaker barn with a loft built including the materials, erection, slab etc which seems like a great price. Of course thats just for the 'shell' but it seems like its a much cheaper alternative to kit homes which start at double that for lock up only. Can anyone offer some advice or experience? Has anyone lived in/or built a quaker/American barn? What was it like to live in? was it expensive to build and convert to a home? Is it strong and structurally sound enough to live in? Any info would be much appreciated Thanks Re: Quaker barn/American barn homes? Pros and cons please 2Sep 08, 2011 8:44 pm I'm resuscitating this thread from 09 as we are now in a position similar to the previous poster. We are considering a Quaker Barn shed converted to a Class 1 dwelling with appropriate insulation and all the rest. Has anyone any experieince in the shed living or shed conversion to Class 1 dwelling? Re: Quaker barn/American barn homes? Have had a possible price of around $13k 'mentioned' for a 60' x 40' (or 18m x 12m) kit barn/shed. Not sure if that's class 1 engineered though???? Is that good?
