Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 19, 2009 8:40 pm Just a pretty straight forward question should we do it or not based on our floor plan (see below)?
http://www.porterdavis.com.au/content/H ... yman29.pdf We do not want to make the area feel closed off but we both think it will be essential given that two televisions will be in close proximity to each other. Second part to this question PD quoted us $434 to put the same double doors as what lead to the master bedroom when we enquired. If we put those doors in we will have the shorter side opening to the left and the bigger side to the right up against the wall - In my mind this should make it feel more open when the doors are fully open. We're not too concerned about the cost just interested in some other options people would consider in that price range? Cheers Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 2Feb 19, 2009 8:43 pm Yes to the doors!! you wont be able to listen to tv's in each room w/out a door.
Maybe get some glass panelled doors or bi folds etc instead of solid doors 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' I'd also be putting one on the opening from the family through to the minor bedrooms. And some in the front hallway. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 4Feb 19, 2009 8:44 pm If cost isn't a major concern, maybe consider a wide pocket slider (probably cost double your current quote due to the fitting and oversized door), that way you can control noise and light to create a better theatre environment. The sliding door can then be relatively hidden when not in use. Good luck! Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 5Feb 19, 2009 8:44 pm I have added slidiing cavity doors to my rumpus at the rear of the house, they were approx $600. My rumpus is in a similiar position to yours and like you I also wanted to be able to close it off from the other living areas. I also have a golden retriever who is nearly 12months, and do not want her trashing the house Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 6Feb 19, 2009 8:46 pm Yes, you won't regret getting doors there. You can always leave them open.

However, one is a timber french door Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 8Feb 19, 2009 8:50 pm Absolute YES from me for the door.
IF there is no door, it will be hard to watch TV in both family and Rumpus. Prolly use a sliding door so u can leave it open when the rumpus is not in use and also still create a sense of openness. Terrence Malick Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 11Feb 19, 2009 9:03 pm I'd definitely do hinged doors as PD suggested. They'll still open up, but when they are closed they'll look much nicer than sliding doors. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 12Feb 19, 2009 9:28 pm I would definitely get double doors in that room, I would also seriously consider some kind of accoustics also - but thats another thread!
This is not going to help at all, but I remember these brilliant double doors to a home theatre area in the Inspired Homes display, they were a mixture of wood and glass from memory but completely blocked out the light when shut. Thats a really simple explanation and I wish I had photos but its been over a year since I saw them so the memory isn't all that great! ICK So glad the building is over, never again. Loooove our house, but still not quite sure it was worth all of the stress they put us through! Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 13Feb 19, 2009 9:49 pm yes to doors or it will be hard to use as a home theatre (which is meant to be shut???)
But I would go sliding, I agree that some can look really tacky, but if money is not a huge concern then there are some really wonderful sliding doors out there, as suggested above, and perhaps go see some being used before you choose. Although maybe sliding doors wouldn't work so well for a home theatre, perhaps hinged, but glass??? Just keep the opening as wide as possible, so when the room is not in use, you can keep the doors wide open. Annie A thankful person is a happy person. They will probably spend most of their life open but for those few times we want to do separate things they will be worth it. Annie The opening with the doors will be 1320mm the standard opening on the plans for that space is only 1100mm so it will already be wider thanks to the doors. I think putting full size double doors will make the dining area too much of a walk way. Terrence Malick Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 17Feb 19, 2009 10:39 pm ^^Wouldn't it be more symetric to get the double doors the same size. Maybe not the full size 2 x 820mm doors but the 2 x 720mm ones? Also it would make the opening that little bit wider, which makes the whole area look more connected when opended? It would look symetric but I have a feeling a full sized door opening into the room would be in the way. So if we get the doors right the large side opens against the wall and the smaller side into the room. Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 19Feb 20, 2009 9:09 am I love the doors you're planning on getting - we have those in our bedroom. We usually leave the smaller one locked and just use the other as a standard door. But we can open both when we need to.
I hate open plan....it suits fine when you're just a couple or maybe when kids are small, but once the kids grow up it just doesn't work. Especially when you have several guitarists in the family. Re: Should we put a door on the Rumpus/HT Room? 20Feb 20, 2009 9:32 am Zerosignal Done the 1 and half sized hinged doors are in!. You won't regret it, good move. We usually leave the smaller one locked and just use the other as a standard door. But we can open both when we need to. We have these as well in our bedroom, Zerosignal, just make sure that the light switch for your HT is put in a practical location. Ours and many others who built with PD had it put behind the half door - stupid place! Happy at Home From the information posted it looks to me your rumpus room is nothing more than extended garage. That will present a number of challenges.
