Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Where are all the people that are building in the country??? 21Feb 20, 2009 6:59 am I don't think Mernda is classified as country, but it is on the very edge of it and my block is on the very far edge of Mernda - Whittlesea is part of Telstra Country thingy and it's only 5 minutes up the road. It's going to feel a lot more like country than city seeing as I am currently in Thornbury 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' people out there, it's nice to know I'm not on my own. Although I would be questionig some of these "country" places mentioned...PMSL MBBN: Oh Bendigo, my home town, yay...NOT!!! Funny enough I call bgo the city...hahaha Especially where I moved to. LOL Anyone in "hicksville" country then??? I am in a town with a population of about 4000 anyone else??? Re: Where are all the people that are building in the country??? 23Feb 20, 2009 7:21 am Believe it or not... Wallan's population is about 5,000 I think.
And the weirdest thing is this, even thought it's only about 50k from Melbourne, there's actually 2 country towns closer to the city than us. Kalkallo and Beveridge. No-one went North in Melbourne. As ridiculous as it sounds, we really are country. We are Kelly country. Who knew? It sounds so silly doesn't it? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Being Quote: 50k from Melbourne charge extra to build in the country? Like they do here. I have found our price is so much more $$$ than in the city, even though they use local tradies. Re: Where are all the people that are building in the country??? 25Feb 20, 2009 8:15 am Yes, we have area surcharges.
I know you're laughing at my "50k from the city". I am too. We lived 50k from the city in the east and were smack bang in the middle of suburbia. But Wallan is actually a country town by any definition. We will be Mitchell Shire. We fall under the same banner as Kilmore and Broadford. It is surrounded by farmland in every direction. So we are country. But you seem to be taking the p*ss out of me. If you only wanted people in this thread to be a certain number of k's from cities or of certain population numbers, maybe you need to clarify your definition of country. You asked a question and I answered it, but if it's not "country" enough for your definition then I won't respond to your thread anymore. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Where are all the people that are building in the country??? 26Feb 20, 2009 8:43 am Ah, Joles, but everyone takes the p*** out of everyone - I take the p*** out of myself - its all fun
However I don't live in a one horse country town but in a Regional City ,population around 23,000, perhaps there are 2 types of 'country builders' - those liveing in small places and those liveing long way from capital cities or both of the above. We pay area surcharges with some builders who come from Adelaide - I believe Hickinbotham were charging $30,000 , but there are also local builders or builders with local branches like ours who do not charge this. Re: Where are all the people that are building in the country??? 27Feb 20, 2009 11:06 am Hi Joles,
Definately wasn't taking the pi** out of you and wasn't laughing that you are 50kms from city at all, not the way my post was intended. Quote: I know you're laughing at my "50k from the city". I am just looking forward to being able to talk to some other builders that face the different challenges that I will no doubt be facing because we are soooo far away from a major town. Re: Where are all the people that are building in the country??? 28Feb 20, 2009 1:57 pm Hi,
Joles you're not alone in definition. Gisborne also has population round 5000 so similar to Wallin in different direction. Definitely a country town. Our particular builder had a 3000 area surcharge and M3tricon that we went to tender with had a similar surcharge as well. We are in the Macedon Ranges Shire though I have found the Council very helpful to deal with and very friendly unlike some city councils that I have lived in previously. Dale. I am in a town with a population of about 4000 anyone else??? OK. Nearest town - 2km has a population of around 200, my kids go to the local school where they have 80 students who live either in the town or on surrounding farms. I work at a nearby town which is 10km away and has a population of 2000. Definetely hicksville The thing I found hardest building in the country, was that there is no display homes to go & look at, and whenever I had a trip to Adelaide (3 hours away) to choose things I was under pressure to get it all done in a day. Thank goodness for Homeone & Michelle Re: Where are all the people that are building in the country??? 30Feb 20, 2009 8:15 pm Ahhh Jo, yes we are on the same page,
as that will be what I will be facing in no time, although we will most liekly have to do the 5.5hr drive to Melbourne for our colour selection. I know what you mean with no display homes close by, it makes it really hard but I love looking at builders webpages for ideas and inspiration. Have you finished your house now? Will just read this thread silently and jealously (except for this post ) Don't be jealous donuts. I get jealous when you guys start talking about beacon lighting or ikea or all the display homes you have visited. It would be great to be able to have access to all the places to pick up bits and pieces for our house. Hang on, maybe I am saving myself some money, can't just pop in and grab things on a whim. lol Re: Where are all the people that are building in the country??? 38Feb 21, 2009 1:46 pm pinkfairymagic Ohh ohh fairyblue, echuca - cool you are only about 3.5hrs from me, much closer than melbourne.
