Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 18, 2009 8:30 pm Which is the better option, i love the look of colourbond but is it noisy when it rains?
Actually i grew up with a iron roof and never noticed the noise. Now we have tiles on the roof in this soon to be knockdown house which get broken but they are old and getting mossy now. Re: Colourbond or a tile roof 2Feb 18, 2009 8:33 pm I really love the sound of rain on a tin roof - I don't find it noise, I find it relaxing 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Must be the insulation maybe?
homemaker - most builders charge an upgrade for colorbond. But I have heard from someone kind of in the industry that the materials and labour that go into a colorbond roof are actually cheaper for the builders than tiles; they can just charge more because ppl will pay it (supply and demand etc). Not sure how true this is. I know steel prices are on the increase so maybe this is not so true anymore... in any case we paid $2000 to upgrade to it for a 30 square single storey home. Re: Colourbond or a tile roof 8Feb 18, 2009 10:12 pm yeah I really like colourbond - always have. But some people don't. It's a bit of personal choice. Some say tiles are more a security risk because theives can lift them and enter your home through your roof, and others don't like the sound of the rain etc... so there's good and bad for both I guess! rain isnt loud, or even audible most of the times with colorbond, unfortunately, so that wont be an issue Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. I guess our new colorbond roof says a lot about who's really the boss The fact that the house is in a semi-rural location means she's probably right anyway from an aesthetic POV. However, for retrofitting wiring etc, I'd rather slide up a tile than unscrew a roof sheet. I'll have to get her to do that bit now I'm not fussed either way about the sound of rain on the roof. I can't even remember what that was all about as we live in SA. I think all rain events here have been permanently cancelled Cheers zeke Re: Colourbond or a tile roof 11Feb 19, 2009 12:48 am I read, today, in a book on sustainability, that if you want to drink rainwater from your roof, use metal rather than concrete for the roofing. We drank the tankwater that was collected from our corrugated iron roof when I was much younger. Re: Colourbond or a tile roof 12Feb 19, 2009 7:16 am In another post - you were after the cheapest builder for a 2 storey - anyone will charge extra for c/b roof.
As a guide - my builder charged $3.5k After 4 years - we're in! Re: Colourbond or a tile roof 13Feb 19, 2009 7:41 am from my building experience I found colorbond was the same price as tiles, overall.
What made it about 1500-2000 more expensive was that I opted for sarking. I could have saved more money if i reduced the size of my F17 lintels, but at the time due to metal price increase i wasnt sure which way i was heading. I also noticed that the major builders dont have 900 centre trusses on their steel roofs - they still use 600, which costs around 30% more. Not too sure why they do this perhaps it is just a process thing. Never did understand it. All i could come to is that they are so process oriated that it takes to much effort to order a different truss. I dont think it would be a processing reason as trusses have to many variables to be mass producing certain set ups. When i walk around my estate. The homes built by mcon and pd etc have 600centres for sheet roofing. I will take a photo next time to prove it. Another issue my be because they do not use battons to fix plaster 900centres are to far away for plaster without battons maybe?? Re: Colourbond or a tile roof 19Feb 19, 2009 9:49 am Becster In WA, my experience is that colorbond seems to be standard - ie we weren't charged any extra. SA too. Our house has colourbond roof as our builder only does colourbond roofs, I would say they are more common in new houses in SA than tiles. I quite like the look of both. Re rain on roof - I found the sound of rain on our old house which had a steel roof and on this house to be relaxing, I love ****** in bed listening to the rain (actually I just love rain - its such a novelty for South Australians now in fact our area has not had any recordable rain since last year ) but it is not so noisy that it interferes with everyday life, you can still have a conversation, hear the TV etc. Cheers.
