Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 14, 2010 11:00 pm Hi, I'm new to the boards here but have been reading every now and then and following some blogs especially those building with Wisdom. We are only up to the tender stage and I just have a few questions about money saving tips. I have read in several blogs where some work and in particular the tiling was done afterwards. Is that a big money saver and is it worth the shopping around looking for tiles and a tiler? (We want the large 600x600 tiles and knowing us the ones we see and like will most probably be the most expensive!) I have also read they the cost more to lay as well. And what about lighting? I know someone who built several years ago and just paid for normal bayonet (?) lights to be put in and then put in down lights after. So all you "experienced" builders out there who have saved money in one way or another by doing things after handover, we would love to read your tips. Cheers Anna Re: Building with Wisdom Homes (Another Impression 38) 2Mar 15, 2010 8:44 am Hi Anna V, Where are you building? From what I know about the tiles the cost to lay really depends on the tiler. All of the builders will charge you about double the price to lay 600's, so it is cheaper to do afterwards. From what I understand to lay 600's, the concreter underneath needs to be really flat so they use a thicker bed than they do with smaller tiles. I havent had mine layed yet but my tilers prefer 600's cause they go down quicker and they are not charging extra to lay them. You can pick up some cheap 600's have a look at a photo on my blog. There are a few other people that could probably recomend tilers for you. For the lights one of my future neighbour is also building with W and he is getting extra standard fitting to change over the LED downlights later. He is having them put all over his living areas. His Homeone ID is Gwumm so maybe you could PM him to find out how much it costs. Good Luck with the build. PM stevep79 - I believe they saved about $4k getting the tiling done after handover. Much cheaper to get W to put in a batten point for every light/downlight/ceiling fan you want and get a sparky to install them post hand over (even cheaper if you have a friend in the business) Other money savers - if you're getting shelves put in the built-in wardrobes later - take out the wire shelves and get a credit (only a few hundred dollars) After 4 years - we're in! Re: Building with Wisdom Homes (Another Impression 38) 4Mar 15, 2010 4:52 pm Hi, thanks for the replies. Min, we are building at Kellyville Ridge. We were lucky to find a "decent" size block (still smaller than what we are on at the moment though) after contacting an agent who advised us that a block had just come back on the market that day after the buyers finance fell through (unlucky for them though). I have seen your blog previously and the photos of the incredibly cheap tiles, lucky you. We will most probably do the tiling after as well , together with the downlights. Stonecutter, I have been following your blog as well and yesterday actually, we took a drive out to Stonecutters Ridge to check the place out and had a sticky beak at your place and the other Wisdom Home there as well, (hope you don't mind!). The red looks great. Even better than the photos. Makes me want the Modern facade even more (but too expensive , so we are going with the Esprit. (Unless we can cut some costs somewhere). We are just waiting for our tender to come through (the second one, which we already want to change again lol). Once we are happy with the tender I'll be setting up my blog too. The red looks great. Even better than the photos. Of course not! Lots of people drive around - especially L platers (I've seen some scary things even though there aren't many other drivers on the road!) Yeah - the red turns out so much more vibrant in person After 4 years - we're in! Can someone please offer some advice? Im DESPERATE. Because I'm completely and utterly exhausted.
