Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 15, 2009 9:05 pm Hey at the end of December I put a deposit on a Dennis Family home to be built, I am just wondering what people have heard about them and if anyone has had good/bad experiences with them.
Also I am thinking of getting a colorbond roof, can anyone tell me advantages and disadvantages of colorbond roofs. Re: Thoughts on dennis family homes and colorbond roofing. 2Feb 15, 2009 9:07 pm If I could I would have a colourbond roof, I love the sound of the rain on tin/metal (when it does actually rain) and I really love the look of it.
No idea on the structual/practical bits to do with it all, but I do love it 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' My DH doesn't like them much, but let's face it, who cares what he thinks! lol (but "it's true" I say with a straight face!) I particularly love cream colourbond roofs if it suits the bricks/render etc... http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n54/ ... n09002.jpg http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n54/ ... n09006.jpg Annie A thankful person is a happy person. We are going with tiles over colourbond just because we want to put the money we would have spent on colour bond roof into something inside the house instead. Re: Thoughts on dennis family homes and colorbond roofing. 5Feb 16, 2009 12:02 pm We're definitely going for one. Nava only charges around $3500 for colorbond roof, which is very reasonable price! I love the light colors! Same as you annie, DH didn't like the idea of colorbond coz he thinks that's ugly. But who cares if he doesn't like it!?!? After I give him the comparsions, he slightly changed his mind..and, he's the one doesn't really care about the details of the house anyway! As long as he has his study room and game room, that's fine.
The bad--1) ppl said it's noisy when it rains or hails. but with the high insulations nowadays, you'll find it's not really a problem at all. 2) ppl said it gets hot much faster coz it's metal, but the fact is the light color ones reflects more heat than tiles and it cools down faster than tiles. The good--1) compare to concret tiles, colorbond is much much lighter in weights! Depends on your house size, you'll be looking at 1-2 tones of color bond roof compare to 5-6 tones of tile roof sitting on top of your house! 2) It collects rain much better than tiles, so good for the rain water tanks! 3) security reason..tiles are easy to flip open-coz they just sitting on top of each other, thus easier for the robber sto get into the house without too much difficulty. but colorbond is secured with bolts, so harder for robbers to get in. of course they can still do that if they carry tools. 4) it's especially good at windy place. at least the roof won't be blown off like the tile roof in strong winds! My next door neightbour had to replaced his tile roof after the strong wind last year. That happened to him twice so far--his house is less than 10 years old. HI JRambo, We've signed with Dennis Family on end of Nov 2008. Hmm, hopefully everything would be ok. My hubby and I are scheduled for colour selection on the 23rd Feb. just as quickly as a properly secured tiled roof. Both have their pro's and con's obviously. Also can depend on the style of home. Also quicker to replace a couple of roof tiles rather than a sheet of metal. I know someone that built with them and the house fell down within 4 months!! only joking... My parents built with executive homes which I think is the same company.. they went over the contract by about 5 months but they got about $10,000 back in overdue fees.. it was $500 a week fee back then.. But the quality of the house was excellent.. four years on, still no problems... Re: Thoughts on dennis family homes and colorbond roofing. 12Dec 16, 2009 4:43 pm We are building with them. Construction commenced in September 2009 for our 27sq double storey house. I think we are nearing lock-up stage. Our neighbor who are also building with them (they are now in fixing stage) said that our house construction is running fast. Some of our friends who are with other builders also said the same thing. We have also been credited almost half the site costs which were not used up. No huge rocks to remove on our site. We are happy so far. BTW, we have roof tiles. But yeah, i kinda miss a colorbond roof . I grew up in a family house that has it. Missed the sound of raindrops on rainy season. Cheers, Re: Thoughts on dennis family homes and colorbond roofing. 13Dec 16, 2009 5:17 pm We went with the colourbond roof main reason was that its light weight as we are building on the side of a hill so we need to go with a light weight construction, the other is we wanted a light colour roof (surfmist) and we prefer the look of the lighter colours in colourbond than tiles. It will be a 21 week build for me. I have been very happy with Dennis. I think they have been very easy to deal with and the couple of problems I have had were attended to very quickly. They threw in a few freebies for me and my site supervisor was really good. All in all, very happy with them as a company and I would not only recommend them to friends, but I would build with them again. Re: Thoughts on dennis family homes and colorbond roofing. 17Dec 17, 2009 10:33 am Hi all, Can anyone tell me why colourbond roofs are more expensive... I imagine the stuff is much faster to lay, as it covers a larger area and is easier to fasten then an individual tile? What am I missing? I am not 100% sure either but I have a hunch that brickwork is cheaper than hardie cladding...bricks are tiny in comparison to a 2m long plank that just simply gets nailed in...Is this assumption correct? Re: Thoughts on dennis family homes and colorbond roofing. 18Dec 17, 2009 10:37 am No idea why some builders include colourbond... where others charge an upgrade for it I wanted tiles, hubby wanted colourbond (he's a plumber - says in terms in maintenance he would pick colourbond any time over tiles), but Henley were charging a large upgrade fee, so tiles won out. We are absolutely loving the experience everything has run so smoothly, the build hasnt been super fast but am very happy with the quality and progress and as long as it is finished by the due date there wont be any dramas. I would strongly reccommend DFH as to date they have been very pleasant helpful and friendly to deal with.
