Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Alfresco or Pergola? 21Apr 21, 2009 4:13 pm for me light and heat from the sun is a key issue. we're having an alresco on our western side, inbetween two protending ends of the house (so, in the middle of the back of the house). Having deep eaves and closed sides suits us for this end of the house as it will help keep the house cooler in summer and provide un undercover area for outdoor eating (which is all we'll really use it for, a table and chairs) plus we'll get the sun slanting in for the longest possible time in winter evenings as see the sun set. We probably would add a bit of a pergola onto it at some stage after hand over as well, though - and grow plants over it. i think that's a nice way of blending the line between indoor and outdoor Building Emperor Q2 with Henley in Featherbrook stage 13, Point Cook. Slab laid - Building has begun! Re: Alfresco or Pergola? 22Apr 21, 2009 5:56 pm I don't think a pergola has to look like an add on. Just use your imagination. I've had a small one done with concrete rendered pillars to match the render at the front of the house and painted the wood the same color as the colorbond. If I told people it was a standard part of the house they wouldn't know any different. Some of the Stratco colorbond pergolas have an arched or pointed roof and can look very classy - the added roof height gives a bigger impression of space than the standard ceiling height of an alfresco. Re: Alfresco or Pergola? 23Apr 21, 2009 6:31 pm We plan to build a pergola on the north side of our house, running almost the length from the garage to the end of the house, with a pitched gable roof, and ceiling fans for when it's hot and stuffy in summer. We're going to deck aswell. Thought about an alfresco, and were really tempted, but for half the cost we could build a pergola 3 times the size. Re: Alfresco or Pergola? 24Apr 21, 2009 6:46 pm yes of course I know what a alfesco is.some people can think of other things to spend the money on and donot think it affair to attack people for the choice they make at the end of the day even one is different and has different tastes.and as for a perogla not adding to the value of a home they is very wrong I worked in the real estate industry in sydney for many years and have not heard that one before i could quote may examples were they have added value most times more that it cost.please remember it is a personal choice finished building 40 square home on 5 acres with perry homes.working on the landscaping just finished pool deck with ://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2217 Re: Alfresco or Pergola? 25Apr 21, 2009 7:00 pm Mozzie I don't think a pergola has to look like an add on. This is very true. We have decided to go with the pergola option as alfrescos can be pricey if you want a big one. Our pergola will have brick rendered pillars as well and my DH is a plasterer so he will plaster the ceiling as well. You can do some really nice pergolas that will go with your house you just need to look around. Is there a building permit? RU in Victoria?
