Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 04, 2009 9:12 am I am going to build my dream home this year. I have not settled on a builder yet. If you know of someone who got the job done without any headaches refer them onto me please. ( Melb Sth East Glen Eira) I am about to part with my life savings, and I keep hearing scary stories of people having to take builders to court because of botched jobs and withholding payments.. Also let me know who to avoid. I have been on the building register to look at deregistered builders and most of the builders are from the country, although Glenvil and Prentice homes got a look in too. Re: Building my dream home 2Feb 04, 2009 9:23 am Hi there McKinnon,
Congrats on your decision to build. We just handed over for a deposit on the weekend and are waiting for soil tests to come back. I was very nervous also initially because there were so many horror stories out there. This forum is a great wealth of information and support because there are many people like you and me who share their trials and tribulations. We've gone for a smaller builder that had a design that suited us. The process so far has been great. The Sales Consultant has not pressured us into anything and is very approachable. The advice that i was given initially was that you need to keep on top of things. If something doesn't look right then it's best to raise it straight away. Good luck with the journey! Rookie Re: Building my dream home 3Feb 04, 2009 10:05 am My biggest piece of advice would be not to settle for or sign anything with which you are the slightest bit uncomfortable. It might be scary, but it's usually a better decision in the long run. In addition, if you don't like the person you're dealing with at a particular builder, say so, and get someone else. Your customer service person is not your friend. They are there to do a job (for you!) and you deserve to have that job done well.
And research! Research research research! You can never do enough. By the end of our contract process I was telling the customer service rep what our options were, she had no idea. It pays well to be informed. Good luck! --Mike Everything I know, I learned from SBS. LATEST: Frame Complete http://metricon-mercer.livejournal.com We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds.
