Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 03, 2009 8:31 pm Hi all
My hubby's uncle ( a tiler) commenced tiling our new house today but has discovered the slab is full of undulations right across the whole floor, making tiling a nightmare. Is this something I can raise with the builder? Should they have ensured it was smooth/level etc?? cheers Michelle Building in remote, regional Vic We have roof, frame, walls, plumbing, electrical....but no bricks! Re: Help: Slab full of undulations - making tiling impossible 2Feb 03, 2009 8:44 pm it may well be something to take up with the builder for sure. You will find with most builders that there is a tolerance that they need to be within.
our spec states: "generally, the floor is to be within +- 10mm of level over an entire room, and at all times +-5mm over any 3m length, as per Guide to Standards and Tolerances of the Building Control Commission of 1/4/99 and AS2870.1 Residential Slabs and Footings" It also mentions that the owner is responsible for making preps if flooring requiresan exactly level finish. Hope this helps somewhat anyway Built 36sq Plantation "Retreat" on 4460m2 at Spring Mountain, Qld In Living and landscaping.. >>> ... http://retreatspring.blogspot.com Re: Help: Slab full of undulations - making tiling impossible 3Feb 03, 2009 8:59 pm Our floors was not completely levelled as well. As ozzroo quoted, if it is within those standards, it is not the builder's fault. Are you getting porcelein or ceramic tiles? If porcelein, you will have to level the floors with wet cement first. Only problem is that we had to cut the bottom of the doors as the floor level became a lot higher. Re: Help: Slab full of undulations - making tiling impossible 4Feb 04, 2009 9:44 am This is exactly the reason why we went with the tiling company our builder goes with instead of getting the tiling done externally after handover. Some people have lots of headaches with the concrete not being very level and having to pay for someone else to grind the floors level before the tiler will finish the job. Just a lot of finger pointing....I hope your builder comes through for you.
