Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 28, 2009 2:52 pm Hi there, we're thinking to invest a greywater system in our new home. Have any one installed / going to install one of those thing in your new home? Any comments? Thanks in advance! --most likely we'll have the one undergound.. greywater 2Jan 28, 2009 3:53 pm Hi popcorn-chicken (love that name).
I would have to say that greywater issue can be a bit of a fuzzy (grey? ) area. Some say that it's great, and that's fine.. ME personally I am not a huge fan of it. Especially for natives and edible crops. I think that you need to use LOW phospherous washing powders and rotate where the water goes. Remember that you will be washing out lots of yukkies, faecal matter (sorry but true however), oils, etc. so consider these things. Salts present in the powders will also build up in the soil over time. If you can alternate watering with fresh water then it would be better. As I said, it's a personal opinion and I can't be sure who is right or wrong. All I know that considering these things, if someone was to give me a free greywater system, I would politely say 'no thank you very much''. I would be happy to consider other points of view as I am always open to new info, but just thoughht I would mention my point of view for what it's worth. themax Building with the big C, final plans being drawn up, packing boxes everywhere, colour choices scrambled in my head... Re: Grey water system--any good suggestions? 3Jan 28, 2009 4:26 pm Thanks for that themax, hmm. didn't thought about that!! ok... maybe we can just use the water from shower and bath then...not washing... we've been collecting water from shower (with bucket in the shower!!) and using the bath water from our babies to water our garden. And the garden seems ok with that. It just such a pain to carry those water from the big bucket and bath tub to garden in many trips, and we have carpet all the way from bathroom to the front door... Re: Grey water system--any good suggestions? 4Jan 28, 2009 4:43 pm Hi,
There are 2 different types of grey water systems - pure diversion of the grey water and full treatment systems. Personally I would only use the full treatment systems but you are looking at around 12000 fully installed and they require annual servicing. Basically the water is treated and then stored in a tank for you to use however you want. We looked into grey water provisioning our house but the cost to alter the plumbing was too great - something unusual so they marked it up a lot. Dale. Wow! $16000!!! But ya, you have a HUGE house to start with! Interesting to see that invention! Re: Grey water system--any good suggestions? 10Jan 29, 2009 11:35 am can't stop laughing about that thread tho.. a serious topic became...so funny!! Re: Grey water system--any good suggestions? 11Jan 29, 2009 7:12 pm I'd suggest you pipe the house ready to use greywater then wait for some standards to be set.
As per this article I received the other day. Steve CSIRO takes first steps towards national greywater technology standards 15 January 2009 CSIRO says it has developed a practical and sustainable method for testing greywater treatment technologies, opening the way for a standard national testing method. The partnership between CSIRO’s Water for a Healthy Country flagship and the Smart Water Fund has yielded a protocol which involves using a synthetic formula to test a treatment technology. The test formula contained soap, toothpaste, washing powder and other personal products, combined with high levels of bacteria, viruses and protozoa. The formula was fed into the treatment technology, and the output tested against the Australian standards for recycled water. There is currently no standard national testing method for greywater systems. States and territories each have their own legislation for greywater collection, treatment and use. A national regime for greywater treatment technologies, according to the researchers, would simplify the processes for manufacturers of the systems, and increase the adoption rates for recycled water. Can I just tell my builder that I want to have grewater system installed later, and just do the pipe work for me now? Will they know what to do? or do i have to tell them exactly what is needed in plumbing system?is it easy to divert the water from bathrooms with extra pipes?
