Hi,
We have our colour selections appointment on Saturday and our consultant just called to make sure I tell her what height and width I want my fridge provision to be?? What is everyone generally going with??
Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Fridge Provision ?? 2Jan 28, 2009 12:10 pm I am going to make my fridge recess 1000mm wide (INTERNALLY). The standard on the Porter Davis plan was 9000mm wide.
Most of the flash new 'double door' fridges are 890mm or 910mm wide. We plan to buy one of the 910mm wide models, and think that 4.5cm space on each side will be sufficient. Have a look at what fridge you want, and decided from there. I suggest you look at 'The Good Guys' website and browse fridges, as I think they have dimensions on their website. I would have made it 1000mm but our fridge deoth was only 600mm and most of the fridges I opened wouldn't allow us to open the freezer door fully so I made it a bit wider to allow for this.
I would say 1000mm wide and 700mm deep would fit most double door fridges My karma ran over your dogma fridge depth 5Jan 28, 2009 6:03 pm We had a similar problem regarding standard kitchen design. However, we were lucky enough to pick a builder (Inspired Homes) willing to accomodate our monster fridge - Electrolux 4 door. The width & hight wern't so much an issue but the depth of 800mm was. We found most openings in kitchen design are 900 wide x 600 deep. We were able to increase the back kitchen wall cavity thickness to 240mm (standard wall thickness 90mm), we then incorporated a 150mm deep alcove where the fridge will be located. The extra wall thickness only cost $270, which was far cheaper than replacing our $3000 fridge. 25 years in the planning. We have the option of a fridge inside the pantry or forming a fridge space outside it, with no loss of space either way. I think it would be painful to have to open the pantry, before you open the fridge door. Not for me. Built in now city 2009, now moving to the country to embark on another build. If all the minor appliances (kettle, toaster, sandwich maker, etc) are in there permanently and breakfasts, lunches and snacks will be prepared in there, I'd definitely do it.
Easier to bring food out once a day for main meal to cook on hotplates or in the oven than go back and forth to the butler's pantry twenty times a day for minor things. Depends on how you'll set your butler's pantry up as to whether it is viable. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Fridge Provision ?? 9Jan 28, 2009 6:42 pm WE made our recess 1000 wide internally, and 1100 mt deep, this takes into account the kitchen depth of 600 giving us 400 cutting into the lounge at the back of the wall.
Then we have made a matching false wall the opposite side in the lounge. This has now formed a recess in the middle of the lounge wall in which to mount a plasma and have a TV unit. I didnt really want the fridge door sitting forward of the kitchen cupboards, its a galley kitchen and I want everything to sit flush. Hopefully we will be able to open the doors far enough, and if we have to take shelves out for cleaning etc then we can just pull the fridge out further to allow the doors to open more that 90 degrees. We are going with the samsung ice and water fridge with home bar. Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Fridge Provision ?? 10Jan 28, 2009 7:59 pm joles If it's a full butler's pantry, I'd put the fridge in there. It is a big walk in pantry, large enough to accomodate a sink if you'd wish so. The standard design calls for a fridge inside with a sliding door on the outside. Dunno yet - still in two minds about this one, on one side inside the pantry allows easy access for changing water filters, fitting tap connections and on the otherside it is that one step further away. Ugh Decisions decisions. Re: Fridge Provision ?? 12Jan 29, 2009 8:46 pm OK just to freak everyone out. We have 1500mm width. We have a standard fridge/freezer and a smaller half height bar fridge size freezer as well. These only JUST fit into the space we've allowed with a small space between them and to each side for airflow. I wanted to be able to eventually get a 2nd full sized freezer but unless it comes in a narrower width like the smaller half freezer it's obviously not going to fit. ( I wanted them as separate appliances. Re: Fridge Provision ?? 13Jan 29, 2009 9:33 pm Well, I'm swimming against the tide here.....(happens a lot )
Our previous house had a 900mm fridge opening and recently we bought a new fridge. There were several wider ones I liked, but we found the 890 mm wide Electrolux/Westinghouse/Simpson 610 litre side by sides (all 3 brands are the same basic fridge with different levels of finish) are designed and made in Australia to fit a 900 wide opening. We bought the Electrolux after a chance discussion with a fridge repair guy strongly recommended any of those 3. We're 100% happy with it in spite of being unable to see the basis of the price premium (around $1200.00) over the cheapest version (Simpson). The Electrolux has much nicer, heavier gauge SS doors than the Westinghouse, though.....square edges and less "wrinkles". Now I really like the look of a fridge fitting snugly in the alcove and those fridges are designed to have only a tiny 5mm clearance each side. So, in the new place we went with the 900mm alcove again. It'll all be fine until that fridge dies and there's no equivalent sized replacement available then I guess we'll worry about that when it happens....
