Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 21, 2009 8:26 am The builder who chose suggested it would be cheaper for us to either do it ourselves or get an independent consultant to do it. Is it hard to do the assessment yourself? I've had a quick look at it but I don't really know if I have the capacity to get the measurements to the surrounding vegetation etc. How much did your bushfire assessment cost? I've been told by various builders anywhere from $400 to $1000. One builder (the we didn't choose) suggested that since we wanted to do the level 1 bushfire requirements anyway that we just submit that without the assessment report and if it gets knocked back then we go ahead with the assessment and go up to the level 2. This made me very uncomfortable and was part of the reason we didn't go with this builder. Re: Anyone done their own bushfire hazard assessment? 2Nov 22, 2009 5:52 am I did my own report for our subdivision (one into two lots), RFS informed me over the phone just to use the standard single dwelling report, already council have had to attend site to take photo's that RFS now requested. I have since commisioned a professional report for our house DA, the quality of the report is definitely worth the $875. Remember it is all about protecting your assets and possibly your lives. We are well and truley getting level 1. Since I'm building above the standard for what we think we need anyway I'm just not sure if it's worth the money to get someone to do that report. On the side with vegetation we have another 20 metre wide block, plus a 25metre road and pathways then at least 25 metres of managed land which is all flat before a 4WD rd then the vegetation which then has an upslope. So it's more than 70 metres to the vegetation which puts us in level 1. I'm waiting on the quote for eaves to make them level 2 standard so I'd rather spend the money on the construction to the standard than the report itself. Is the report any more valuable than determining which level of construction is required? I don't need a report that just details what level 1 or level 2 standard is because that is freely available already from the RFS Hi Mofflepop, I would recommend finding a building designer to prepare plans, they should design to your specified budget. The benefit is you can tender the project out… 9 20162 I work with owner, he/she is my man on the ground and I instruct them when to visit the site and take photos and I have other tools in the bag. 4 15013 I am in the same situation, would you be able to give some insights in to this?
