Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 23, 2009 1:57 pm Just wondering if we need to take out extra insurance for items we supply. Not that we're going to have anything too valuable going in, but after reading that some tradies come through and pinch stuff after hours it makes sense to ensure the little things are covered. Obviously the builder has insurance for what they supply, but I'm sure this wouldn't cover any little extras we add to it would it?
Does anyone have any ideas? Re: Insurance for owner supplied items 2Jan 23, 2009 2:42 pm Hi,
As far as I know it isn't possible to get such insurance. You can ask your builder if they will insure the items for you but if they won't / can't then it isn't possible. Perhaps check with an insurance broker in case there is an obscure policy that will do it. Dale. Thanks guys Re: Insurance for owner supplied items 5May 23, 2009 9:44 pm I'd be very interested in knowing how to deal with this issue as well. We're thinking of supplying our own light fittings and appliances so if we can't insure them from installation to when we move in this would be a significant problem. Any ideas from anyone who's been through this? I know there are policies for owner builders to cover everything during the build, but this is a different scenario for items not covered by the builder's insurance during the build. I couldn't find anything on CBA's website or from googling. Has anyone here actually gotten this sort of insurance? That's good thinking, but I am also concerned about theft after installation but before handover. I'd prefer not to have to camp out in the house every night in between installation and handover! I guess we could try to get the installation of these as late in the build as possible but I'm sure there'll be at least a few days (or more) between the dates.
