Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 23, 2009 8:56 am Hey everyone!!
Quick question : We are having 9 foot ceilings and above the front door on our drawings it has '300mm Hilite Above Openings' - what does this mean?? Is it bricked, plastered, or glass?? Not sure from what it says but it looks as though it may be plastered? Any help would be great!! Also.... is it normal for homes with 9ft ceilings for the windows to be extended or should they be bricked above?? Does that make sense...?? Hope so!! Thanks people!! Any assistance would be great cos we don't want to sign off on something we are not happy with!! Building the 'Clovelly' with Statesman Homes. On our plans we have a 6c highlight over our back sliding doors. It is extra glass over the sliding door. Do your plans have window sizes on them? Ours tell us how many brick courses high the windows are. Hope this was some help

Thank you for your reply, our plans probably do tell us how many brick courses high the windows are, but I am not that great at reading plans! lol! So glass you reckon?? Hmm, dunno if I would like glass above the front door...! It would be fine on the sliding doors! I will try to clarfiy this with the builder shortly and let you know!! Thanks for your help!! We have a 300mm highlight above our front door - it's glass. The door is a standard height exterior door (2040mm high), and with 9 ft ceilings - raised to 10 ft in the entry- plastering above would make the door look squat and silly, which is the reason we opted for the highlight. Your contract documentation should specify whether you have brick infills above windows or not. It seems to depend on the builder - plus whether or not you have eaves and how wide they are will have an impact. Some windows or sliding doors may be a different height and need some sort of infill. We have a couple with narrow gaps between window and brickwork, and our builder used powder-coated aluminum infills to match the window frame (for a larger area, that would probably look awful). Our stained timber bifolds have matching timber infills above them. Seems there are a lot of different ways to deal with windows and doors..... Re: Quick question about our Master Plans 5Jan 23, 2009 11:36 am Thanks kek!!
I have just spoken to the consultant, they advised that the hilite (sp? highlightI think!) is glass! They said we can upgrade it at colour selections, to frosted etc... Do you have a blog or pic of your front door so we can we can see what it looks like with glass above it?? Am having trouble picturing it in my head, am not convinced! Cheers for your help guys, will keep you posted! (Pun not intended! lol) Building the 'Clovelly' with Statesman Homes. Deposit paid, master plans received, currently awaiting soil/engineers report. Re: Quick question about our Master Plans 6Jan 23, 2009 12:39 pm We too are having a glass highlight above our front doors. We went with this option and double timber doors rather then having sidelights down each side of the door - something we have in this rental and hate as it gives you no privacy at all when it is unglazed glass. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Quick question about our Master Plans 7Jan 23, 2009 12:44 pm Leigh&Sam Thanks kek!! Privacy isn't an issue for us because of the house design. I love the look of clear glass, but I wouldn't have it if we had one of the designs that seem to be common where you look from the front door straight through to the living areas. All you see from our front door is the entry, ending at an angled wall with a window looking onto our al fresco. Re: Quick question about our Master Plans 8Jan 23, 2009 12:56 pm Love your front entry Kek! lovely deck! and I really like the bricks too. What bricks are you using?
The clear glass looks great, but yes, I agree, I wouldn't have it if you could see straight into the living areas. Re: Quick question about our Master Plans 9Jan 23, 2009 1:31 pm Thanks Jochicho! The bricks are Austral Harvest Malt.
My husband is very proud of that deck - there are some more pics here: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=12882 There are an awful lot of houses in our neighbourhood where the front door gives a clear view through to the back of the house - which always seems to be a living room. I can't understand why the owners have chosen clear glass (is it very expensive to upgrade?). They either have no privacy, or have to hang blinds and keep them closed - which seems to defeat the purpose of having glass in the first place. Surelythe idea is to let light in? Re: Quick question about our Master Plans 10Jan 23, 2009 1:38 pm Thanks kek, great pics, much appreciated!!
I must say your front door looks great from both ways!!! I think I am a little turned around on the whole issue now... lol! We have it above our sliding door at the back leading out to the alfresco, which I think is a good idea to allow light in!! Well said Jochicho, the decking looks great!! We would have this if it was within the budget...!! He he!! We are using Austral 'chocolate' which might be a similiar shade to your bricks kek, which loog good also! It helps when you see people's houses with similar taste, reassuring to say the least!! Many thanks!! Building the 'Clovelly' with Statesman Homes. I did look at it, but since we had a dark colour for garage door, spouting etc, we decided to stick to a lightler brick.
As for the decking - no way were we getting the builder to do it.... or an outside contractor for that matter. It's expensive! My husband did it himself. It took him a lot longer than a professional (and I had to put up with his bad tempered outbursts ), but it cost only about $800. Re: Quick question about our Master Plans 12Jan 23, 2009 6:41 pm kek I can't understand why the owners have chosen clear glass... Our Cambridge has clear glass each side of the front door, but we're planning on putting leaded glass (stained glass) inserts behind it. We're hoping SWMBO's dad will do it for us, it's one of his hobbies. We also have friends who recently built a Beechwood (just before they went under) on an acreage who did something similar with their front door side panels, and it looks great. Re: Quick question about our Master Plans 13Jan 23, 2009 9:59 pm Hi Kek, thanks for the link to the extra pics, your husband has done a fantastic job! it's just amazing! I think I would be able to live with the boots not getting picked up after that master piece...
I just showed my husband, who loves working with timber and who will be doing the deck on the outdoor room and he just loved it! so we might try to incorporate it to our house! I can't wait to see more pics of your house, it seems like you guys have lots of great ideas. I like the fact that the front door is a different colour on the inside to the outside, all these things to think of! Re: Quick question about our Master Plans 14Jan 24, 2009 10:41 am I am a fan of glass above the doorway. We haven't done it in our house because for some reason it didn't occur to me to talk to DH about it. He doesn't like glass on the sides though. In our last house we put in an internal door in our house at the end of the passageway leading into the main living area from the front door. When we did this because there was no door frame area we put in frosted glass above the door rather than a solid panel. I loved this. It added light to the hallway/passageway and worked beautifully. I was almost tempted to ask for the same arrangement in our new house. as we've opted for a door in the same position. Thank you so much. This has been very helpful.
