Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 21, 2009 10:06 pm I am having so much trouble deciding on external colours for my house. I decided to owner build because I thought it would be easier for me to get what I want....... and now I am stuck!
I have chosen a dark brown brick (PGH Cassica) and would love to do a light coloured Colorbond roof, I love Dune...... i just don't know what other colour will work well. I am left with windows, gutters, facia & downpipes.......... do i do them all one colour or add another 2 colours to the mix? I had initially chosen woodland grey but dont know how this will look against the brown as at times it can have a green tinge to it. Anyone who has used Dune as a roof on dark brown bricks....... any ideas and/or pics will be greatly appreciated Cazz Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 2Jan 21, 2009 10:24 pm Cazz,
Can I recommend Michelle on this forum. she really helped me out the other day when I had the same problem as your good self. If you are REALLY lucky, D@n can actually photoshop your colours onto a photo of a possible facade to give you an idea of what to chose. Both a weath of information and advice. Good luck. ryan Building Vancouver 33 - My Thread https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89689 Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 4Jan 21, 2009 10:32 pm I think the Dune and dark bricks will go. I'd only introduce one more colour, and I like windows to contrast and stand out.
So I'd go this....... Dune roof Dune guttering Dune downpipes Surfmist fascia (it will look white) White windows Remember to consider your interior colour choices because you can see the windows inside. PLEASE HELP! 5Jan 21, 2009 10:46 pm Thanks heaps for the suggestion Jo.... however my hubby doesn't like white windows. Also because I plan on having an off-white stack-stone porch i want this to be a feature, so not sure if too many light colours will look too much.
i totally understand the point about seeing the windows from the inside and that is what has also turned me off black windows as a choice (which was also suggested to me).... oh I should also add that i am doing an off-white mortar very confused Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 6Jan 21, 2009 10:50 pm Do you know your window supplier? You will have limited window colours ...... what about Jasper windows, Jasper guttering and downpipes and Dune roof and fascia?
Or if you have a modern interior.... metro silver windows and keep everything else Dune? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 7Jan 21, 2009 11:01 pm We have chosen our windows and placed a deposit with Renma
its so funny that you mention Jasper because that was what I had come up with today except that it isn't a standard colour and it would mean an extra $800 plus I would be stuck with black winders as they are all awning windows. I can have anodised aluminium as standard and that was our very first pick but when i found out about problems later with acid damage from brick cleaning i changed my mind. I am considering a neutral colour they have called pottery for the windows, have you seen this colour before? I still hope it will give a modern look Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 8Jan 21, 2009 11:03 pm No... is it similar to colourbond paperbark??
You probably shouldn't listen to me cos I'm not very good with externals. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 10Jan 21, 2009 11:11 pm That definitely sounds like it will go.... but you should wait for someone else to help you.
Do you have pics of your brick or the pottery colour? You really shouldn't listen to me.... I've agonised over my windows for months.... even going so far as talking my builder into getting me a different supplier. Then today I got my drawings and I have timber facade windows. I never knew..... So I can't be trusted with externals! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 11Jan 21, 2009 11:18 pm The bricks are only very new, just released before Christmas. If you look at them on PGH website they look totally different. I will hopefully get to Renma tomorrow to look at their colours again and get a sample of the pottery to put up against the brick i have at home. I have little colour swatches here but i can't imagine how they would look like all together on the house...
I would love timber facade windows that would just solve my problem thanks very much for your help Jo what a headache I have! Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 12Jan 21, 2009 11:20 pm You can have my timber facade windows cos I don't want them!
Tomorrow put your pics up and you'll be bombarded with opinions! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 13Jan 22, 2009 12:46 am FWIW, our windows are paperbark and the winders for awning windows (at least in the brands we are getting) aren't available in paperbark. So we ended up with paperbark windows and pottery winders and they look like they go together and no-one would notice the difference....I'd say no more than one shade different rather than two.
I'm not sure if this is because the winders are a different gloss level and texture (which helps to disguise the colour difference...if that isn't too Irish) or if the colours are closer than they appear on the colour charts. I guess the point is that paperbark and pottery seem to be slightly different shades of the same neutral colour and go together well........and can even be substituted for each other (to some extent) if a close match isn't critical. Cheers zeke We've got cedar windows on the front elevation (to be stained walnut brown) because that's needed to get the look we're after.......I wish we could have aluminium on the front too as the bronze anodised aluminium windows in our previous house looked like new after 30 years with zero maintenance. Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 14Jan 22, 2009 8:40 am thanks for the info zeke,
the window company i am dealing with can get pottery winders which is another reason that colour appeals to me. Its good to know its a close match to paperbark..... i may be able to incorporate it somewhere else. i am also considering anodised aluminium again as they look fantastic and i am running out of options...... i will have to check if they can get silver winders but i am guessing I will most likely be stuck with black ones. Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 15Jan 22, 2009 11:01 am I’ll try and get a look at this later tonight, I have a lot going on at the moment. PLEASE HELP! 16Jan 22, 2009 5:22 pm I have given it alot of thought today and this is what I have come up with..
Bricks - Cassica (dark brown)........ see link bellow although not very accurate, it is more brown than shown, pic looks quite purple Windows - anodised aluminum (i can get matching winders) Roof - Colorbond 'Dune' Gutter/fascia/downpipes - Colorbond 'Jasper' Portico - off white stack stone Front door & roller door - timber, walnut or similar Opinions please http://pghclay.com.au/Uploads/Download/ ... ighres.jpg Re: External Colours.......... PLEASE HELP! 17Jan 22, 2009 5:25 pm I was just about to look at this for you.
I’m happy with your selections, and you can’t go wrong with introducing the timber to the front with those colours, well done. External choices are a minefield But - help is at hand. I installed (for free) an absolutely amazing program today called Google sketch. It took me about 15 mins to draw the front facade and then you can mix and match the colours as you please. You can add glass, timber, brick blah blah If you aren't good on computers, I'll do it for you (for free!) coz I love this sort of thing. Our current rental has about 30 different colour combo's posted all over the place. Looks like we will be going with Dune and Jasper, with timber panelift doors. If you post me a sameple facade, I'll do it all for you to get an idea of how it will look. Send me a PM and I'll give you my email address. Jonathan Building the Caprice33 by Provincial Homes.
