Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 20, 2009 7:44 pm Hi everyone
I previously posted this in the lighting forum, but noone saw it We are getting close to finalising our lighting plan and I could really use some advice or thoughts on how many light fittings we should go for in our family room! The room is part of an open plan family/kitchen area, and is approximately 6.3m x 6.3m. It will also have a raked ceiling that starts at 2.7m and at it's highest point will be approx 4.7m. We'd like to have downlights as the main lighting with a feature pendant in the middle of the room. The downlights we like are actually a triple downlight fitting and are quite large (52cm x 20.5xm), with a 30deg tilt. Given the size of the fittings and the fact that they a triple downlights, do you think that 4 lights will provide enough light?? So, positioning them about 1.8m from each wall would mean they'd be spaced about 1.8m between the lights - if that makes sense?? I'll try and attach a picture and hopefully it will make more sense! Any thoughts or advice would be really appreciated!!!! Thanks heaps, Adam Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ [/b] Re: Enough light for Family Room 6.3m x 6.3m (raked ceiling)? 2Jan 20, 2009 8:04 pm Yep, this should be sufficiant. We had a room similar size with 2 x 4spotlights, plus an oyster over the kitchen, plus 2 x downlights over the brekky bar, with a scizzor truss ceiling.
Can't quite see the lights but you get the idea of the ceiling area. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Hope that helps Built a modified "Daydream 279" .. Cor@l Homes on a flat 4473m block!! For what it's worth, this is what we've done in our lounge, which has a raked ceiling:
The room measures approx 4.0m x 5.6m. It's hard to describe, but the ceiling actually extends over a hallway with bifold doors looking onto an al fresco room - I've included that hallway area in the measurements I've quoted. You can see the floorplan here: http://www.porterdavis.com.au/content/Houses/Bridgeport/Floorplans/Bridgeport35.pdf The ceiling at its highest point is about 3980mm, so not as high as yours. We chose to put 4 standard halogen low-voltage downlights in the lounge, spaced evenly in a square formation. We didn't even bother with the tilting kind, since bright light isn't really needed in this room. Then we had a junction box added behind a bulkhead in the hallway area - we plan to add trapeze lighting with 3 more halogen downlights strung across there. It's plenty of light for our needs for a "formal" lounge, but that's about all I can tell you. I'm not a lighting expert, and know nothing about the ideal spacing for particular types of light fittings. I think a feature pendant would work really well - we actually considered it ourselves, but chose to go with the trapeze lighting, which we liked in the display. Have you considered going to a lighting store and having a chat to the staff there? They might be able to offer some suggestions. Nice room by the way...is that an aquarium in the wall?!? kek Have you considered going to a lighting store and having a chat to the staff there? They might be able to offer some suggestions. We did go and have a chat to some lighting places and asked for some advice, but to be honest...they either seemed to be a little unsure (mainly around the idea of multi downlights in a raked ceiling) and also...when we "drew up" what they suggested, it just seemed like sooooo many lights!!! Oh..and thanks for replying! Any thoughts or opinions are really appreciated! Re: Enough light for Family Room 6.3m x 6.3m (raked ceiling)? 5Jan 20, 2009 8:53 pm Yep, the aquarium is in the wall.. Would have loved to add on into our new house as well but hubby didnt want this. This is our 3rd build and we have had the tank in the wall in the first 2.
