Browse Forums Building A New House Re: McDonald Jones Homes 2Jan 14, 2009 3:43 am This isn't going to answer your question - but I used to be up in the Hunter Valley a lot and loved some of their designs - asked if I could pay to use one of their plans and build in Melbourne and they said no
Fair enough too - I just got excited because it is proving quite hard to find a plan to go on my block After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: McDonald Jones Homes 3Jan 14, 2009 8:17 am We looked at building one of their homes - loved the design and it is a gorgeous home now that you can see it in person (since built a display at Lochinvar).
Our issue was that they took too long to even get a quote together. My sister built with them probably 6yrs ago and she didn't have any issues. I did have a customer when I was a lending manager build with them who said never again. They had massive problems however not sure whether they were extremely fussy or whether the builder caused the problems. We went through their display homes again on the weekend and they are quite lovely. They say they are open to alterations as well. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: McDonald Jones Homes 5Jan 21, 2009 9:14 pm Hey JNR... just picked up your post of the 7th Jan 09... re McDonald Jones.. you are asking if they are good bad or indifferent.... look we are under construction now... the tiling in the bathroom started today.... This is our 3rd house so i can only judge them against the other 2 previous builders. Our pre construction work went well except for some delays in Lake Mac council which i think was more the councils fault than the builder but having said that the construction started in the quote period... we were threatened with a price increase because our bank was slow with the final letter but in the end everything was sweet.
Construction was quick to start ..they said 28 days and were on site in about 15..so we were pretty happy there. They don't tell you much unless you ask.. but the supervisor rings every week with an update which we hadn't experienced before with our other builders. Even with the Christmas break they are going to be well within contract period so we are pretty happy as we are paying rent after selling our second house. The quality seems pretty good...and we love the steel frames... we are surrounded by termites in Lake Mac...So the steel was a necessity.... so all in all it all seems ok... we should be in in 2 weeks !!!! By the way we are building the Chesterfield Grande...Love it !!! Robertcharles Re: McDonald Jones Homes 8Jan 21, 2009 9:44 pm Hi JNR
We moved into our new McDonald Jones Home 8 weeks ago. Took nearly a year from deposit to finish. We love their designs. After looking at loads of builders and floor plans we found theirs offered great open living for the money. They were very flexiable with altering design (for a cost). We built the Chesterfield Grand Elite and we love it. In regards to the journey there is couple of things they could improve on. Sales guy was excellent. Always returned calls and was very helpful in the alterations we wanted to make. As for improvement, the customer relations person appointed to us was very average to say the least. Our SS was'nt to bad. Had to chase him on issues with the build that he had missed. He did have a big work load though. Did have a building inspection at handover which resulted in a few heated words from the SS and our building inspecter. Well worth the money as issues were picked up that I had missed. Most of those things have been fixed. The only thing that I havent been satisfied with is the quality of finish with plastering. Lots of pin holing in the plaster work, ceiling nails showing and lots of poor paint work. These issues will be brought up at our 3 month inspection. After reading this forum for the last 18 months and hearing what some people have been through I can recommend this builder. Many happy people in our area. Would I build with them again? Yes. They have great designs. Will we ever get there? Re: McDonald Jones Homes 9Jan 21, 2009 11:05 pm I personally would not sign on with a company which uses deception to advertise their services. RC and Hanson use very similar language to each other and are either extremely enthusiastic about this company or are pretending to be people he is not. Do they really think people are so gullible that they will not see through their comments? Busted.... Our site costs on a flat block were good but increased due to extra peiring required due to soil conditions. MJH were for some time aware of the large increase of the number of peirs required as opposed to the original plans but failed to advise me that the costs will go over as they are meant to advise me of an estimate of the increase under the HIA contract. I wasn't called by MJH on the day of the peiring to let me know it would go over. As I could not witness the peir depths I found it frustrating to sign for a 3K variation. Apart from this and some poor communication amongst staff we are fairly happy with MJH. Hi AKG, We had a base tender of $592 for 31 squares from MC Donald Jones.
