rectified may not be able to be used with 3mm gap, might be sharp edges.. Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Things nearly done. Re: Smallest gap size usable with ceramic tiles? 22Dec 26, 2008 12:46 pm Just a warning - I laid dark chocolate floor tiles in my bathroom when I built 4 years ago. They looked great then, but now they are awful and a real chore to clean ! the lime / minerals from the water and soap splashes, etc have left white marks all over them which is almost impossible to remove !
I'm looking at trying a new product called enduroshield on the bathroom tiles in my new home - supposedly a nano layer which makes cleaning a breeze and stops dirt / minerals attaching to the glass / tiles. Re: Smallest gap size usable with ceramic tiles? 23Dec 26, 2008 1:53 pm I recently renovated a place and relaid all the tiles with 50cm2 size ceramic tiles. I was told the building standards is 3mm gap for ceramic and about 1.5-2mm for Porcelain - mainly due to the square edges and less imperfections. Also if it is a REALLY square edge they have to be close so people don't cut/stub themselves on the edges. It does happen alot
As for laying the tiles, I was quoted between $28 - $55 per sqm for ceramic tiles and $40+ for porcelain due to the extra care that has to be done by having a closer gaps. You must make sure you have really high quality tiles to as any imperfections will cause the required gap to be larger. Good luck! Re: Smallest gap size usable with ceramic tiles? 24Dec 27, 2008 11:53 am we just laid 600 x 600mm porcelein tiles. It is matt on the top. We had to do wet cement over the existing slab so that the surface is flat (otherwise the edges are quite sharp). The tiler placed the tile 1.5mm apart. We purchase the tiles, and pay the tiler labour and materials at around $40 per m2. It was a very good price as he is a friend. The tiles were around $27 per m2 for 120m2 area. Given the size of the job, we got 5 quotes. All were pretty much the same at $60 or $65 per m2. Tiles were listed at $120 per meter but we ultimately paid $70. I've never seen any porcelain priced at $27 (or anywhere near it!). A final note, whether or not your tiles need sealing I'd recommend grout sealing. Especially if it is a light coloured grout.
