Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 20, 2008 3:45 pm Hi
My hubby's uncle is a painter and we've discussed the option of painting the house ourselves with our builder. He said he's happy for this to happen, but the credit back to us will be only $5000. He claims that's what the allocation for a 35sqm house with 9 foot ceilings costs. I doubt it! Can anyone tell me what they might have paid, or got back as a credit?? cheers Michelle Building in remote, regional Vic We have roof, frame, walls, plumbing, electrical....but no bricks! Re: Anyone get a credit for painting themselves? 2Dec 20, 2008 5:39 pm We built years ago in Adelaide with Fairmont (something I would never do again) and I painted inside and out. And as we didn't like their wall & floor tile selection we also supplied our own.
I cant remember the credits we received, it certainly didn't cover anywhere near our costs. When we queried the credits we were told the amount was "Less handling fees". Go figure !! Re: Anyone get a credit for painting themselves? 6Dec 22, 2008 1:09 pm Our credit back for doing the internal painting was $10,000 ish (just over). The house is 412 sqm. So, lots of profit in that 10K figure for the builder! Clearly we could hire someone ourselves for much less than 10K, and depending on how the bank account is looking at handover we will assess our options then. Re: Anyone get a credit for painting themselves? 7Dec 23, 2008 4:52 pm Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle of pointing oursleves or not.... Re: Anyone get a credit for painting themselves? 8Dec 24, 2008 5:53 pm IF you do your own painting you get the option to seal the gyprock before top coating, something some builders or painters ignore.
A paint supplier (Solver) told me back around the time I was painting mine, about dozens of unhappy new home owners who had builders do the painting, have come into his store complaining the paint was 'chalking' off the walls, because apparently they didnt use a sealer. Arfur Re: Anyone get a credit for painting themselves? 9Dec 24, 2008 6:54 pm I remain mystified by this. We recently painted vast expanses of gyprock. We started using a primer/sealer/undercoat as recommended by the paint supplier (Dulux). It was horrible paint to use and we got sick of doing 3 coats in total.
After reading on the internet that builders in SA only do the 2 topcoats we decided to do the same as we were painting the inside of a (lined and very large) shed. The verdict: infinitely easier and we think a better looking result. The colour just seems more even and the finish seems to have a nicer texture. (though this could be imagination). I'l watch with interest to see what the builder's painter does with our house.....we're totally over the painting caper (not difficult, but boring++)) Cheers zeke Hi, Have used the Dulux 1 step, oil base on my walls(white set), out of can it’s already a more thinner product than a final coat paint Also in water base Water or… 3 5016 Thanks mate, is there a standard off the shelf type breathable product I can apply DIY?
