Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 19, 2008 2:56 pm Hi All
we have just finished frame stage and looking at getting the prewiring done for the house. We looking at getting 2 telepts in casual +M bdroom (total $300) and 3 foxtel pts in -- Casual, M bdroom, Home theatre. ($ 60 each) I have loads of ques so here i go: 1. Do i need separate point for foxtel other than the telep pt 2. I spoke to one guy for prewiring and he mentioned that if I have one foxtel connection and have3 pts say main in the casual then for changing channels i have to keep going to the main pt ie casual? what can i do to change channels from the same room where am watching ??!! He mentioend some infra red "thing" that will cost $ 1300 for just changing channels.. this dosent sound rt !! i can buy a small TV in that price ! 3. SOmeone in JB also mentioned some AV receiver.. to change channels. so if we put that do we need separate foxtel pt in each of 3 room or 1 pt will do ? 4. to add to the trouble we have a dish for international channels so how to go abt cabling for that +changing channels applies to it ! I am attaching elec plan so any help on above ans is greatly appreciated !! PS : If someone can also recomment any contact to do the above pl feel FREE to write bk !!!!! Nonie Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 2Dec 19, 2008 3:04 pm The infrared device for changing channels is not that much (more like $80-$100). It's basically a part of those wireless tv signal transmitters which enables you to watch a dvd/tv/video signal from one room on another tv in another room. You connect the rca cables to the AVout connections on your player/foxtel/tv in the source room to the transmitter device and the rca cables to the AV1 or 2 in the receiver device in the other rooom. The unit also has a infrared piece which sticks on the remote receiver on the source device which also sends the signal to the other room. You then point the remote to the receiver in the other room and that sends the remote signal to the source device in the source room.
Really sorry if it sounds confusing, but here's an ebay link to such a device. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/5-8GHz-Wireless-7ch-Video-Sender-with-Remote-Repeater_W0QQitemZ260333567371QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Television_Accessories?hash=item260333567371&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 3Dec 19, 2008 6:43 pm im probably missing the point, but can you just have standard tv connections put in the rooms you want to use fox and they will then provide you with a seperate box/remote for each room you want it seperately controlled in?
thats the expensive and easy way to do it, you might be wanting to have one fox box and then just try and route it yourself, that i dont know of anyone thats achieved Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Things nearly done. Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 4Dec 19, 2008 7:01 pm nonie We looking at getting 2 telepts in casual +M bdroom (total $300) Far too much ... $120 would be heaps for this. nonie and 3 foxtel pts in -- Casual, M bdroom, Home theatre. ($ 60 each) This is an OK price ... $50 is the going rate though. You may also wish to consider running 2 foxtel points to each point as this is the new standard required for the newer foxtel boxes. $75 per point then I have loads of ques so here i go: nonie 1. Do i need separate point for foxtel other than the telep pt Yes. Foxtel runs through a big thick black cable, phone uses a thin white wire generally. They both carry different signals. nonie 2. I spoke to one guy for prewiring and he mentioned that if I have one foxtel connection and have3 pts say main in the casual then for changing channels i have to keep going to the main pt ie casual? what can i do to change channels from the same room where am watching ??!! The easiest way is to include an infra red repeating system into your house is hard wired. They are the best as they always work. http://www.selbyacoustics.com.au/storefrontprofiles/deluxesfitemdetail.aspx?sfid=74520&c=84091&i=244548511 You can also do it wirelessly: http://www.rflinkusa.com/products_awx7011.html You also need to consider how you will distribute the vision around the house. What cables you use and the distances will make all the difference. nonie He mentioend some infra red "thing" that will cost $ 1300 for just changing channels.. this dosent sound rt !! i can buy a small TV in that price ! Sounds expensive ... Not quite sure what that would be. nonie 3. SOmeone in JB also mentioned some AV receiver.. to change channels. so if we put that do we need separate foxtel pt in each of 3 room or 1 pt will do ? If you are happy with everyone watching the same channel then you can share the one box...if you want to watch a different channel at the same time on each Tv then you need a seperate box at each tv too. nonie 4. to add to the trouble we have a dish for international channels so how to go abt cabling for that +changing channels applies to it ! Depends on whether the dish is a roof or ground mount. If it is roof just run a cable to the point where the dish will go. If it is a ground mount just run the wires to the outside of the bricks (where the dish will go) and tap them off with a wallplate for connection later. nonie I am attaching elec plan so any help on above ans is greatly appreciated !! PS : If someone can also recomment any contact to do the above pl feel FREE to write bk !!!!! Nonie Perhaps contact Rod...If you are localish he should be able to help. I noticed no theatre mention here ...tut tut Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 5Dec 19, 2008 8:21 pm Thanks a lot for your replies !
It really helps and clarifies. Matt, I am ok to have same channels running in every room as long as i can change channels from each room . So to understand what you said, i need to get infra red repeating system hardwired.. bascially get cables done and later attach the system you mentioned in link (IR Repeater Remote Control Extender ) So what type of wiring shuld i tell the person to do for this ? ours is a ground mount dish so will tell person to run extra cable outside brick . can same IR system be sed to watch dish too or am asking too much !! HT am already disscussing separately with Rod Nonie Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 6Dec 19, 2008 8:39 pm You just need to run cat 5e/6 cable (ethernet). Same cable they use for networking computers and phone lines. Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 7Dec 19, 2008 8:50 pm wakeboardandy You just need to run cat 5e/6 cable (ethernet). Same cable they use for networking computers and phone lines. You could use cat5/6 or telephone cable (4 core) ie austel cable. Rod is able to do all this as well. Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 8Dec 21, 2008 8:50 am I've been using an infra red sender/receiver for Foxtel for about 6 years and in 3 different houses and never had a problem. Never stops working, never gets fuzzy reception. Was $90 well spent. Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 9Dec 21, 2008 4:45 pm hi Hoffies
This is awesome .. 6 yrs .. wow ! Can you tell me the name of the device and from where you got it installed Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 10Dec 22, 2008 1:14 pm Hi Noni
Make sure that your builder uses either Tri Shield or Quad Shield cabling for any TV / Foxtel points. Also by using the F-Type connectors you get less signal loss. If they are connecting these points to 1 antenna using a 3 way splitter, then just change the splitter for a multiswitch and add the satellites into the input, then use a diplexer at the end of each run. Are you having IQ / IQ2? IQ by satellite requires at least 2 cable runs from the satellite dish to the point in the home. This is due to the V & H polarities used by the decoder, some channels come through the V & some through the H. We are doing the following pre-wiring in our home for TV / Foxtel. 2 Quad shield cable runs from each of 4 bedrooms/study to a central place in the roof cavity near the man-hole & powerpoint / light. 2 Quad Shield runs to both living rooms 4 Quad Shield runs to H.T. room 1 Quad Shield run to garage. 1 Cat 5 cable run to each room, including behind the fridge into the study One run of quad shield into each of the rooms is a spare, for potential later use. Our satellite dish(es) & TV Antenna will connect to what is called a multiswitch (in our case 5 input / 8 output) 2 V inputs, 2 H inputs & 1 Terrestrial Antenna input. We possibly also require a signal amplifier This multiswitch will be installed in the roof in an easily accessable location so I can add further satellite dishes or change cabling if required. By using the multiswitch, you could have up to 8 decoders running off the one dish. I'll only ever have 2 Foxtel decoders & 1 international decoder. The Antenna UHF/VHF in will have a combiner allowing me to output the RF signal from Foxtel / other satellite back into the system and tune into any TV as a UHF channel.(1 run from th H.T. is used for this return signal) A diplexer is then used at the end of the run splitting the satellite & Terrestrial signals either way. The terrestrial end goes into the TV for FTA channels, including whats on the Foxtel / Satellite decoder from the H.T. Room The satellite end can be used for the second foxtel /other satellite decoder if required. Eg. This gives me the option to move a foxtel box from one room to another easily for a better picture quality by using Component or S-Video connectors. Hope this doesn't sound too complicated. Cheers, jamestheoz Is it just me or did everyone else get lost after the: "We are doing the following pre-wiring in our home for TV / Foxtel. " bit? Could you draw a diagram? Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 12Dec 22, 2008 1:58 pm Sorry Jamestheoz.. even I lost you after a while
I just got a quote from the person for the installation.. this is what he had to say : 1. Supply and install 1 x Foxtel & IQ prewire to roof area for connection at a later date. 2. Supply and install 1 x Foxtel back feed lead to roof for connection onto television coaxial. 3. Supply and install 1 x Back feed lead for satellite set top box to roof area for connection into television coaxial. 4. Supply and install RF Modulator for Foxtel/IQ box. 5. Supply and install fly leads/scart leads as required Is this ok or should I be looking at something more ? (To tell u the trust some of this also goes over my head !! Re: Foxtel..Changing channels for $1300 !!!Matt ..Rod.Help!! 14Dec 22, 2008 2:49 pm Attached is a basic concept drawing of the TV cabling plan.
Excluded is Cat 5 cabling which goes into the same wallplate as the TV cable All cable is Quad Shield cable. A 300m roll should cost about $150, maybe cheaper on ebay. Don't bother at retail electronics stores as they charge per metre and worse than a wounded bull! Try Middy's or Leckys, etc. and ask for trade pricing!
