Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 11, 2008 9:26 pm We are building in WA with a project builder. Any ideas on their mark ups and what is reasonable? We are looking at getting some accessories for the bathrooms (towel rails, towel rings etc) and their markups appear to be about 125% of the retail price of the same item from the same supplier. Can they do this? Re: Builder's markups 2Dec 11, 2008 9:31 pm When you say 125%, do you mean that if the retail price of an item is $100, they charge you $125?
From what I can gather, builders get discounts between 20 to 50% off retail prices. They then add their builder's margin of something between 5% to 20% to this figure. If you are paying more than retail, something's wrong. Maybe offer to supply the item yourself. I'm sure if you ask the supplier you'll get at least 20% of retail for just about any building product. Also, take at look at the many on-line suppliers. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Builder's markups 3Dec 11, 2008 9:36 pm Thanks Casa2,
As an example, the item in store is $28 and they are charging $64. Some of the things I can do later myself, but things like taps and sinks are a bit harder. Disappointed I'm getting so ripped off Re: Builder's markups 5Dec 11, 2008 9:40 pm mrhappy Thanks Casa2, As an example, the item in store is $28 and they are charging $64. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Hi Mofflepop, I would recommend finding a building designer to prepare plans, they should design to your specified budget. The benefit is you can tender the project out… 9 20413 Hi, did you get any money from insurance? if you did, does it match what you've already paid the builders? 3 9565 |
