Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 09, 2008 6:21 pm I have just signed for a wonderful new house to be built here in WA, and as it is still on the drawing board, I have a short while before making my colour decisions. The first big decision is whether to have colourbond or tiles. (Not sure of the name of the tiles, but they are not the ones that fade).
Does each one have its own benefit, or is it just aesthetic? The houses around me have both, so it is not as if either will look out of place. Would love your comments. Re: Colourbond or tiles on a new house 3Dec 09, 2008 6:33 pm Sometimes price will come into it. However Colorbond should be similar in price to tiles if you dont place sissalation under the colorbond - which is recommended but most builders dont included. Depending on which you include sissalation, Aircon blanket, or aircell the price can change.
Note colorbond is similar price to concrete tiles once you take into account the savings made from using trssus at greater span and also the lower grade lintels required over windows due to the reduction in weight. In terms of roof covering there are 3 comman types concrete, tericotta, colorbond. i will do my best to explain the pro and cons, but these are just my opinion of course. 1. Colorbond -More colors to choose from. -Less maintenance -Requires sissaltion to prevent condensation -Dark colors can fade a little over time. 2. Concrete tiles, Easy and common option, easy to get people to install Color fades over time Morter cracks over time and may need rebedding Tiles are a perfect shape and sit much better than tericotta. can chip and crack 3. Terricotta Do not loose their color over time, DO not sit properly - comman for tiles to be a little warped. Morter cracks over time and may need rebedding Tiles are a perfect shape and sit much better than tericotta. More expensive that concrete tiles. Re: Colourbond or tiles on a new house 4Dec 09, 2008 7:53 pm and the norti robbers can't get in through your colorbond roof as easy as they can by shifting a few tiles.... Although our roof seems so high I'd say the robber would be very silly if he tried. Fi has moved in!! Re: Colourbond or tiles on a new house 5Dec 09, 2008 9:31 pm Mrs SFC and I are building with SPH here in WA and we were given the choice of Colorbond or tiles for the roof, whichever we chose made no difference to the price. We went with a tiled roof.
Regarding potential robbers lifting tiles to gain access, we will be having a monitored alarm system fitted, so hopefully that won't be an issue. The home we live in now has a Colorbond roof and we always get comments from tradies (usually electricians) about how much of a pain it is, especially if we have asked them to do any work near the eaves - they just can't fit! We have even had to reconsider the placement of external fittings because the tradesman was unable to place them where we originally wanted due to lack of access through the roof.
