Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 09, 2008 5:26 pm Well, finally decided to start our own thread as something has FINALLY started to happen on our little piece of Oz.
First, a little background.. We purchased a bit of dirt in Craigieburn back in April this year and decided to build a brand-spanking new home. After months of looking around, we decided on the PD Heywood 28 as it we liked it's open-plan living/entertainment area, AND most importantly, was in our price range. The admin process was a bit of a pain, but compared to other stories, was a walk in the park! So, fast forward to about two weeks ago, after a few hiccups caused by builders next door (ie: they put their bricks on our land which delayed our site start for about a week!!), finally things started happening! Last week, we had our site scraped and on Thursday, the form for our slab was put together! Our SS told us our slab would be poured on Saturday, and lo and behold, we rocked up on Saturday afternoon to see the concreters just about finished. We got a little excited and went back late on Sunday afternoon to have another squizz.... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Ta-Da!! Finished slab! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Moi.. checking it out all over. We were excited to finally see some semblance of a house on our land, but that was nothing compared to what we felt when we went back on Monday to see whether or not our SS was telling us pork-pies about starting the frame on Monday. OMG.. FRAME!! I guess he wasn't kidding! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is looking from our cross-over. Excitement all around (for me anyways ) Finally something happening after so long. I have to say tho, it's been quick from site scrape to now, half a frame. It took them about 4 days! Hopefully they did some more work today and we have some of the other half of the frame up, or even all of it. SS seems quite optomistic and told us we'd have roof tiles by Christmas if everything goes well! *fingers crossed* I dont mind that they take their time, as long as they do things properly. I cant wait to go up again this weekend and see what they've done! Lots of photos to come!! Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 3Dec 09, 2008 5:47 pm Congrat!! Properly the frame will be done before Christmas.. As long as you don't have the idiot framer we had ....but I'm told they don't use him any more.
It'll be fine. Just fine. No, really..... I'm messing with you. In general, Porter Davis Lifestyle seem to do things pretty well. And it IS exciting. Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 5Dec 09, 2008 7:12 pm We went past your place and checked everything out on Tuesday...all looking awsome!!!!!
Am sure that you will have a great ride like we are.... Looking forward to seeing more progress on your Heywood!!!! Exciting isn't it, when they finally start.
Hope it all goes smoothly for you, with no dramas. Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 8Dec 16, 2008 9:50 pm Hi everyone! Thanks for all the good vibes being sent our way. I'm really glad this forum is around; it's helped us heaps so far!!
kek - Sorry to hear your chippies were not up to scratch. Hopefully things are a lot smoother now. shaz - We're almost catching up to you guys! Almost.. but not quite. Hopefully we'll have the insulation in as well before Christmas. haywgl - Been following your thread. Glad things are going well for you as well! So, here's an update! Like clock-work, and invoice was emailed to us, but that means they've finished our frame!! It only took them a week, but everything is up and looks like where it's supposed to be. Partner and I went to have a look on the weekend, not expecting much, and were pleasantly surprised. The ground was pretty much water-logged after the torrential rain we've had over the weekend, but our site held up a lot better than some of the others. Trying to get inside to check it all out was a little tricky tho. I nearly went ankle-deep in the loose, muddy soil they've back-filled and totally caked my WHITE Volleys in mud!! They needed a wash anyways.. haha. Today, partner went up after work to check everything was still ok and he thinks that they've started our electricals and plumbing. I think they've also put up our guttering and the safety rails for the roof tilers. I guess our SS wasnt ****** when he said we'd have roof tiles before Christmas. *does happy dance* So piccies for everyone!! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Our somewhat flooded site.. I'm slightly unco at doing things like that.. LoL!! Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 11Dec 17, 2008 11:53 pm Hee hee.. yeah kek.. that's our lap pool.. We thought we'd add it in last minute.
Thanks for the tip Southies! Although my bf is in IT I'm SO totally unco with most things technological and always need his help. Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 12Dec 18, 2008 7:47 am Looks good! We've been told our frame will take 2-3 weeks to complete, so yours has absolutely rocketed along!
Good luck with everything else! --Mike Everything I know, I learned from SBS. LATEST: Frame Complete http://metricon-mercer.livejournal.com Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 13Dec 18, 2008 7:51 am How exciting is this part?
Slab down, frame up... being able to 'walk around' you house and really start to see how its all going to fit together?? Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 15Dec 18, 2008 10:32 am Congrats
nice choice my friend built the Heywood 29, think its a great house! she changed the loungeroom and courtyard to a theatre room and added the alfresco to outside of the rumpus room!! Something different! Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 16Dec 21, 2008 5:43 pm borg Hi It looks like they fell short on your slab. Are you gong to get someone to have a look at it to see if everything is ok??? What do you mean borg? It all looks like it's supposed to be where it's supposed to be.. but we will be getting an independant inspection at pre-plaster stage. Where do you think it looks short? Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 17Dec 21, 2008 6:16 pm I can see what borg means....at the front , next to your "lap pool" the framework seems to extend down to the level where the bricks will start. I guess there's probably something borg and I are overlooking though
Cheers zeke Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 18Dec 21, 2008 10:43 pm Hey Majic,
Yeah on the right hand side of the house. Instead of the bottom plate resting on the slab it looks to rest on "Legs". I thought I'd bring this to your attention so you are aware of it - (if i am seeing it properly) I have seen some fixed better than others. So just mention it to your inspector and see what he thinks and the best way for it to be fixed, it the slab is short like i think see in the photo. Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 19Dec 22, 2008 10:15 am majikalmushroom, reader request here : can you post a floor plan, I think it makes the house fit together for the reader if we can see the plan on the screen - I looked on your blog but didn't find one there either.
My house is finished now but I love reading these house building threads Re: Our Homey - Finally Moved In!! 20Dec 25, 2008 2:06 pm Hi guys..
Quick update.. the roof tiles are nearly finished! Yay! SS was telling the truth.. still no pork pies on his part. Good for him! Partner went to see if anything had happened in the last week cuz we got a letter from PD saying that work will 'slow down', or pretty much stop during the Christmas period and resume mid Jan. Not that we're in a rush, but we wanted to see something else! borg & zeke - I can see what you mean now. We will definately bring it up with our inspector when he does the pre-plaster inspection. I asked my uncle about it as well cuz he's in the industry and he said it's pretty common, but he said it looks like it's been done pretty well. Will still mention it to inspector as there's a couple of other things we'd like him to have a look at.. like the way the plumber hacked away at our frame to put in the plumbing. Looks a bit *******... Helyn - Here's a floor plan just as you requested.. hee hee. This is just a general one, ours has been flipped as our driveway is on the left hand side (looking from the street). Been meaning to put one up for a while but got lazy.. haha. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Sorry.. it's a bit small I think.. not too sure how to get it any bigger, but you get the general idea. If you really want, you can go to the PD website and look it up there! I'm so technologically inept!! Anyway.. they've also put in the insulation for the exterior walls (I'm not quite sure what it's called, but I know there's a proper name for it!), pretty much finished the plumbing, and our bi-folds! I'm not too sure how safe it is to have them in, but if they get wrecked it's on the builder to replace them right? Will post some pics when I get them from the other half.. Roof tiles before Christmas.. who'dve thunk it? It would be better to enhance the beauty of the living space there should be use of plants that will give some fresh air and attractive look to the space .requires more… 2 19490 Joe, it depends on your certifier but we are noticing the ones we deal with are really cracking down.
