Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 03, 2008 8:13 pm Hi, I need to decide quickly whether to change from our chosen roller door to a panel lift. I'm not fussed but my builder believes that roller doors shouldn't be seen at the front of a house. Anyone having an opinion one way or the other would be much appreciated. This is not an area I had thought about before. Fi has moved in!! Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 2Dec 03, 2008 8:16 pm in our promo, it is a sectional panel lift door which replace the standard roller door, so i guess that means the panel lift door is better than roller door - i have no idea. would lile to hear people's opinion too
nh Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 3Dec 03, 2008 8:17 pm I prefer panel lift at the front just for the look of them, they look more modern and classy IMO. Roller at the back is fine.
Can you have remote control on roller? Not sure but it would be something I would be asking if I was thinking of roller for the front. Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 4Dec 03, 2008 8:18 pm I think sectional panel lift doors look much classier than roller doors. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 5Dec 03, 2008 8:18 pm We had a roller door before and it was fine (except for when I left the kids bike underneath it and it tipped and I blew the motor!). I think my concern regarding the panel lift is that we intend having shelving down each side of the garage and I'm worried the panel lift will interfere with that. I really don't know. One problem with panel lifts is that if they are over a certain width (about 4.5 m from memory) then need bracing which protrude about 200 mm into the garage. This eats into the available room.
B&D have two roller door profiles and the more expensive one look pretty nice. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 8Dec 03, 2008 8:23 pm A panel lift door might interfere with shelving, but it depends on how much wider than the door your garage is, and how high you want to build shelving. Ours has one mount on the wall (on the side where the door is quite close to the wall), and the other on the ceiling. The wall mount is quite high though.
I preferred the internal setup of our old roller door - the door and the motor were neatly out of the way. But the flat panel lift door does look better. We didn't have a choice with our new house; our estate covenants dictate sectional doors and specifically ban roller doors on facades. Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 9Dec 03, 2008 8:25 pm We have a panel lift door and are more than happy with it, although it needed adjustment after the first couple of months. Nothing major though.
I have seen some roller doors fitted to new houses nearby that seem to show a bit of an unnatural crease about half way down. It totally spoils the look of a sleek and even finish. Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 10Dec 05, 2008 9:30 am We've chosen a black panel lift, it's double width because I drive a tank (Chrysler Voyager) and worry about how it would fit if we had a pier in the middle. From what I can remember (and this is testing the memory, our colour selections were last Jan!), we had to have thicker piers at the sides of the carport. There was nothing else mentioned to us about interference etc.
We are having a remote with ours, but plan on parking in the drive during the day, only opening the carport at night or if it's raining. I am worried about burning out the motor if we use it everytime we pop in or out. Our choice was based purely on aesthetics, we have "normal" roller doors now and they do look much neater from inside IMO, but panels look classier from the outside. Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 11Dec 05, 2008 10:06 am Roller doors are a bit cheaper. Also with rollers you can have more storage space in the ceiling of your garage for things like ladders and canoes as the door does not get pulled half way across the garage ceiling, it just takes up a foot or so of space just above the door.
My 2c. Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 12Dec 05, 2008 10:08 am We had panel doors on the front of our last home and a roller door on the back of the garage. We are doing exactly the same again this time - a single and a double panel-lift door in cedar on front and a plain cream roller door on the reverse where it won't be seen.
As our has only been chosen this way purely for the aesthetics. Roller doors are fine however when manually lifting sometimes I find my rental garage door rolls too quickly and slams up. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 14Dec 05, 2008 2:01 pm kyton a single and a double panel-lift door in cedar on front and a plain cream roller door on the reverse where it won't be seen. are you going for a fully wooden door? or is this the timber-look steel door? we're going with the steel door in timber-look - I was told that a fully wooden door was just too expensive (but never got the actual cost) After 4 years - we're in! Re: Garage door - roller or panel lift - opinions please! 15Dec 05, 2008 2:14 pm Stonecutter - no we are the same as you. Timber look aluminium - a lot less maintenance over the years to come. Plus they will match our aluminium timber-look windows on the front of the house. Some things are worth waiting for. I have motorised roller blinds in my house. I motorised all the blinds I use a lot and the ones that don’t get used too often I didn’t. I went through Motorise My… 2 5363 |
