No No, you have explained it well! I think I understand it now THank you haywgl What is people's opinion on rolled vs flush? Would the prefer rolled or flush? Will there be a great deal of visual difference between rolled vs flush? Happy to discuss Williams Landing Stage 10 - Kingwell Neighbourhood Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 22Dec 07, 2008 10:19 pm Me again
We chose flush - because we are having a lighter brick with off white mortar and wanted the white to be closer to the brick to add to the lightness of the bricks. Apparently our color girl said that rolled/raked joints can sometimes cause a shadow which can make the mortar appear darker. So if you are goint ot pay for off white and want it to stand out you would be best having it flush. My karma ran over your dogma Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 23Dec 07, 2008 10:42 pm Thanks again for the advice haywgl
we are also going for lighter colour bricks (parchment or lonsdale). Have not seen nougat personally but it seems to be popular in this website so will definitely have to look at nougat before we finalise our decision. And yes we will be paying for the off-white mortar joints. I will also contact the sales consultant and ask for the price of upgrade from rolled to flush. It makes sense that rolled/raked joints can sometimes cause a shadow which can make the mortar appear darker which is not what we wanted if we choose lighter colour bricks. WOW, I have learnt a great deal on bricks and mortar tonight. Thanks alot guys esp haywgl and joles. Really appreciate it! I was so curious about this nougat brick yesteday night as it is quite popular in this forum. Hence, today I actually drove past a house which uses Austral's nougat colour bricks. How come there are 'dark spots' ? the ones that are displayed at the austral centre does not have any 'dark spots'. Can anyone that has used this nougat bricks advise me if I should expect some 'dark spots' if I decide to go with nougat? Thanks very much Williams Landing Stage 10 - Kingwell Neighbourhood Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 27Dec 08, 2008 8:54 pm nh FND, you got me worry - as i have just chosen Nougat for my house. hope Joles would let us know why there are dark spots? nh Joles doesn't know! Joles is sitting here saying WTF???? How will that look with my Terracoota roof? I will ring Austral tomorrow! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 29Dec 08, 2008 8:57 pm Could those bits be the ends of the bricks, rather than the face?
Doesn't excuse it; they should just cut the brick and use the proper side of the bricks, but I just thought that might be why, as they are all little bits. Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 30Dec 08, 2008 9:03 pm donuts Could those bits be the ends of the bricks, rather than the face? Yeah they are... if you have a careful layer you could definitely get them to use the ones with the darker ends in places where only the face will show. My understanding was the ends were only slightly darker.... like the ends visible on the corner of the house on the left hand side. But what's the go with the big purple bits! They are purple aren't they or is it just my screen? I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 31Dec 08, 2008 9:20 pm Well I got my pallets delivered and definately didn't notice any dark bits - but to be honest i don't mind them
I'm so happy with my choice - the bricks look gorgeous! My karma ran over your dogma Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 32Dec 08, 2008 9:26 pm nh and joles – I am so sorry if I have got you guys worried =(
I thought it may be useful if I tell the whole story: I called Austral Deer Park centre this arvo and asked for the addresses of the houses that use nougat. And since I still live in Canberra at the moment, I also requested for the addresses in Canberra. The person at Austral Deer Park called me back and recommended me to call the Austral Brick Canberra to get the Canberra addresses. I then called Austral Brick Canberra and asked for nougat addresses. I drove past it on my way home from work and took a few pictures. Nougat in ACT and Nougat in VIC – according to Austral Deer Park is the same and hence he recommended me to call the Austral Canberra and request for the addresses. But when I saw the brick, I was quite worried about the ‘dark spots’ and hence I posted the pic to ask for the experts’ opinions. I wouldn’t imagine its only the Canberra Austral Nougat bricks that have dark spots? I am confused too atm, or probably I should ring up Austral Brick Canberra again tomorrow and ask for another address and see if this other address show any dark spot? Happy to discuss. That's fine. I was more surprised than anything. It does look like there isn't that many bricks that are dark. It wouldn't bother me around the sides, but wouldn't be overly keen on the facade. Like I said, I think a quick chat with the brickie would minimise how much of the dark ends are seen. I still think they look great though. And thanks so much for taking the pic. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 34Dec 08, 2008 10:16 pm Hi, We're another couple of "nougat-ites" These bricks were chosen for the 2 unrendered sides of our home to be the best neutral match with the render (Hayme's "MedaIIion Stoneware" - a little "darker and dirtier" than paperbark) and paperbark windows.
I'll try to drop into Austral tomorrow and find out what the story is. Does anyone know if Austral nougat bricks sold in SA are trucked over from the eastern states or produced locally? Anyway, it seems there's no guarantee the colour we were happy with a few months ago is the one we'll be getting now Alas, more homework! Cheers zeke Hey, has anyone else noticed the aspects of the build we worry about lots turn out to be OK and the things we're a bit complacent about turn around and bite us? I guess the only solution is to worry lots about everything and share the worry around a bit....if I'm going to have a nervous breakdown, why shouldn't the ss have one too? Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 35Dec 09, 2008 7:34 pm hey well i have choosen the parchment brick with the standard grey mortor and grey roof tiles and it looks fine.. i was going to upgrade to the white mortor but as im only 20 years old it thought stuff it, and to be honest i reckon it looks fine.. ive had heaps of comments that it looks even better... once i find out how to attach photos to this forum i will do for use too have a look....
