Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 02, 2008 10:06 pm hi,all..
i'm building a home with S1monds, due to start in jan. We are building a Flagstone 2400 Mk11 and I am having trouble deciding on bricks. We are having tiled roof in Barramundi (charcoal) and i really like lighter colored bricks. Choices are : Austral Lonsdale or Parchment. I like the parchment but partner thinks its too "flat". I liked the sample bricks of lonsdale but im worried there will be too many dark spots in it> was just wondering if anyone has either of these bricks or similar?? i think parchment is new, and no photos on austral, and lonsdale hasn't really either. originally was thinking homestead mushroom but i think its too dark, and Buff was too "yellow".. also, is it true that when on a larger surface bricks look lighter than the sample??? thank u!!! Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 2Dec 02, 2008 10:08 pm The Austral place at thomastown has a sample wall of parchment. We've chosen Nougat. I like both! Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 3Dec 02, 2008 10:35 pm have a look at mikkyg's thread, I *think* they uses parchment.
We went with baramundi roof tiles and macadamia bricks, with off white mortar and off white aluminum window frames. Building with Simonds as well and hopefully start in Jan Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 4Dec 03, 2008 8:55 am There is also an austral brick place in deer park, so where ever you live worth a visit!
We didn't use any of those bricks BUT l can tell you from seeing 'the example' to how it looks in our house, ours doesnt seem as red or as dark, we used austral tan! so there could be some truth to what you've heard! l've been told that its worth asking your sales consultant/CSO who ever you are speaking with now if they have houses that are using the bricks you like on that you can go have a look at that way you can see it on the house and get an idea what its like Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 5Dec 03, 2008 9:06 am Where are you building/living? Homestead Mushroom is very popular around my estate, and all the houses have dark grey roofs....
Personally, I thought it was too light, which just shows how different people's tastes can be. Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 6Dec 04, 2008 8:36 am oh i can help... im also building a simonds home in parchement brick.. im at plaster stage now.. i love my parchement bricks... send me your email address and i will send some photos... Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 8Dec 05, 2008 7:40 pm Hi Chi Chi,
If you call Austral Bricks' customer service line they can give you some addresses in your area that have used the bricks you like. If you are going to one of their display centres (Thomastown, Deer park and a new one in Lynbrook/Lyndhurst?), ask the sales people there, they will print you up a list. We did this and found it invaluable, as we found that the brick colours looked so different on a whole house, even compared to the little walls at the displays. We initially went with Nougat, then were told there were problems with them so had to choose another brick. We decided on Maize then at the last minute changed to Chocolate, completely the other end of the scale! We are having a surfmist roof, so hopefully the contrast will work. I believe that the problem with the Nougat bricks has now been sorted out and they are available for selection again... bit late for us. We also like the Mushroom and Newport, too many choices!!! Good luck with the decision and with your build, FD www.thebedbug.com.au Children's Licenced and Treehouse Manchester for all of those new rooms! I don't know if this helps, but here are some walls of some of the bricks, from the Austral display.... the Parchment wall isn't finished though. I included Sandridge as well as it's similar to the look you're after. Terrence Malick Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 10Dec 07, 2008 7:59 pm hey, joles,
isn't it that from outside, the parchment isn't that yellowish, but the samples at our colour selection are VERY yellowish, i wonder whether it is going to fade a bit over time Nougat, haven't found one sample walls with off white motar nh Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 11Dec 07, 2008 8:03 pm Oh nh, I just remembered, my display home is also in Nougat brick AND it has off white mortar. You're best to go there.
The address is Hummingbird Boulevard Tarneit. The house is the Promenade by Boutique Homes. The front has render and tiles, but if you go into the display and around the outside of the house, you can see all the brick and the mortar as the render etc is only to the front. AND it has Dune guttering and fascia!! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I am also a first home buyer and kind of confused with brick selection. After looking at the pics posted by joles, I think I really like the parchment. But as advised, I will still visit the austral centres to look at them. Can I ask, for the parchment in the pics, what is the colour of the mortar joints? It seems to blend it quite well with the parchment colour. If a standard inclusion says " all brickwork with natural colour rolled joint mortar joints", what does this mean? does it go well with parchment? chichi_lala3 - Can I also ask if the Parchment and Lonsdale are standard or an upgrade? Would really appreciate any advice from anyone. Thank you in advance Stephen Williams Landing Stage 10 - Kingwell Neighbourhood Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 18Dec 07, 2008 8:39 pm Natural mortar is a grey colour. The mortar in pics for Lonsdale and Parchment looks to be off-white. The Sandridge and Nougat mortars look to have been colour matched to the bricks.
Off-white mortar will cost you anywhere between $400 and $600 depending on your builder. The Lonsdale and Parchment have flush mortar in the pics. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 19Dec 07, 2008 8:59 pm Wow joles, thanks for the INSTANT Response.
If natural colour is grey, that means a natural colour mortar will not look good with parchment or londsdale! Sorry joles to ask again. You mentioned that mortar in pics for Lonsdale and Parchment looks to be off-white colour. You also mentioned the Lonsdale and Parchment have flush mortar in the pics. what does flush mortar mean? Sorry to ask this type of question, (OH NO, I really dont know anything about even the exterior colour), I cant imagine with interior colour, should I be building a house at all Williams Landing Stage 10 - Kingwell Neighbourhood Re: 1st time builder- need help with bricks!!! 20Dec 07, 2008 9:33 pm Flush mortar basically means the mortar comes up to the bricks (at the same level) whereas rolled or raked is when the mortar is back a bit from the bricks.
