Re: WHY BUILD 37Dec 01, 2008 3:31 pm russell Found another reason to build, today. Electrical safety. We are renting a 1960s vintage house. Today we noticed an odd burning plastic smell and I discovered a power point in my 2-year-old daughter's bedroom hot and smouldering, filling the room with smoke. (Nothing was connected to it and it was switched off.) Quickly went out and pulled the fuse and we've just finished lugging everything out of her room to prevent it becoming inpregnated with toxic-smelling fumes. If it had happened while we'd been out earlier in the day, the house could have burned down. If it had happened tonight while we were all sleeping, it could have been even worse. (And no, the smoke detector didn't go off.. seems it is more sensitive to burned toast smell than burning insulation smell. Plus, daughter sleeps with door shut and no smoke detector in her room.) Looking forward to getting in to a house with 21st century wiring.... scary russell, glad to hear everyone is ok. Yes is another good reason to build - re-wiring a whole house is a pain, and you may not know an old house needs re-wiring till it's too late KW sounds like you've made the decision to build. Good for you! Look forward to following your journey That sucks! Hope it all works out. Good to move away from steel anyway for all your reasons, but it's also thermally poor. 16 17856 Hi All, I just wanted to close this topic out with an update.
