Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 26, 2008 10:50 am Hi all,
I'm keen on doing it for 2 reasons...acoustic needs for my theater room and to lower my energy bills. So lets take a quick poll and see what people did.. thanks for participating. Our 3 kids bedrooms are all next to each other along the back of the house upstairs, we also have a bathroom and ensuite which 'backs' onto their rooms, and I really wanted to 'soundproof' their rooms from each other and we did it ourselves just before the gyprock went up and we used this product. http://www.bradfordinsulation.com.au/Pr ... ernal.aspx Using the following: SoundScreen Plus R2.0 for Internal Walls with a thickness of 75mm. We also put it in the roof space above the 'theatre' room too! I wasn't too worried about the downstairs area. Re: Internal Insulation Poll 4Nov 26, 2008 8:55 pm How effective was the rockwool Clarity?

Bradford claims a 6 decibel attenuation for their product: Quote: A SoundScreen insulated wall will give an improvement of 6Rw (approximately 6dB) over a non-insulated wall. This equates to a 75% reduction in sound power level. I think figures like this can be quite misleading when quoted without explaining the audible result. A reduction of 6dB in sound power level, while it is indeed a 75% reduction of the accoustic energy, is most definitely NOT a 75% reduction in apparent loudness. The human ear is a wonderful thing, it can resolve very quiet sounds like a tap dripping 2 rooms away, and it can also withstand the sound of a jet taking off (for short periods). This is made possible by our perception of loudness being non-linear, perceived loudness is not directly proportional to sound power level. A 3dB drop in sound level is just noticeable, a 6dB drop is fairly obvious, but it takes a 10dB drop for it to appear approximately half as loud. To put it another way (you'll have to trust me on the conversion of decibels to percent), it takes a 90% drop in sound power level for the human ear to perceive a 50% drop in apparent loudness. At the risk of overstating things - to hear a 75% reduction in apparent loudness, you would have to have a 20 decibel reduction in energy level, that's a 99% reduction. For that you probably need a brick wall. All that is probably too complicated to put in a sound insulation advert isn't it? Just beware of figures expressed in energy levels, and remember that 10 decibels reduction equals about half as loud. That was more like $2.50 than $0.02, thanks for reading. Re: Internal Insulation Poll 7Nov 27, 2008 7:08 am sdabel How effective was the rockwool Clarity? regards sean Yet to be determined!!!! We are still not in, but will be happy to report back after... lets say, I don't think I'll regret it. I think it cost us about $37 per bag - I just rang around and got bunnings to price match. I think the normal price was around $40-45 per bag. Re: Internal Insulation Poll 9Nov 27, 2008 2:08 pm Bowens in Melbourne has it for $34.50 per bag of 5 . The website listed above will also help you determine how many bags you will need.
My hometheater room will cost me approx $600 to do which i think will be worth it in the long run. ---->Some say that a recession is when your neighbour loses his/her job while a depression is when you lose yours!<----- Re: Internal Insulation Poll 10Nov 27, 2008 4:24 pm We are building an Illoura 36 upsized to 40sq and PD charged us just on 2K for soundscreen batts to all internal walls. Our tender was September 2008. We thought for that price, they could do it.
Our current 2 storey has "plumbing" noise, and this was a must in the new build. Re: Internal Insulation Poll 11Nov 27, 2008 9:11 pm Lots of excellent information- thanks all. Helldad I liked your description of how effective a 6dB loss is in the real world. We have already specified 13mm plaster so am thinking that sound insulation might not be worth it. Will talk to our SS and see how he feels about us doing it ourselves.
regards sean 6dB 12Nov 27, 2008 10:33 pm sdabel ...how effective a 6dB loss is in the real world. It's always a revelation to have it demonstrated. Just to clarify, I wasn't meaning to say that a 6dB increase in sound insulation is worthless - it just isn't as big a drop as the blurb might imply by creative use of data. In fact, I'd be tempted to do it myself if it was cheap enough - but it isn't. (IMO) Did anyone see the Grand Final of the ABC's "New Inventors" last night (26/11)? The french guy made it into the final with his sound absorbing gel. They demonstrated it by enclosing a loud ghetto blaster first in conventional plasterboard, then in his new sandwich board with the gel inside. The difference was more than 6dB. I wish the stuff was available now at a good price. Built the C£arend0n Cambridge: Moved in. Happy campers. Here's our story on HomeOne I might be old, but I have no trouble finishing my... er... bit disappointing..i need more to give me a good sample ---->Some say that a recession is when your neighbour loses his/her job while a depression is when you lose yours!<----- I would really appreciate if if you can complete the poll about windows, if you have a story I would love to hear it.
