Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 14, 2008 3:10 pm I would have to clean glass but it would be a good wind break, and trust me there is a lot of wind breaking going on at the moment ......
SS - no cleaning but open to the elements a bit more and would kind of cut into the view a bit. Feel free to give an opinion I can't decide, I like both looks. Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 2Nov 14, 2008 3:28 pm I have the same decision to make too and I can't decide either.
My main thought is the cleaning factor - but I also thought about little ones climbing through or over ?. Also does the steel need tightening over time ?. Building Upside down house in Wantirna VIC Current Stage: Procrastination... it's just all too hard.... Blog: http://thereluctantbuilder.blogspot.com/ Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 3Nov 14, 2008 3:36 pm At our current place we have glass - I like both looks but am happy that we have glass mainly for the safety factor with my little ones
The cleaning isn't a huge issue for us - I should probably clean it more though My karma ran over your dogma Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 4Nov 14, 2008 4:30 pm Stainless Steel balustrading does need cleaning, depending on how far away from the water you live it will also tea stain (this looks like rust, but it can be cleaned off). Depending on how it is swaged, depends on how far apart the wires can be. The Building code of Australia states that 3.2mm wire if it is hand swaged can be a maximum of 60mm's apart, if it is hydraulically swaged it can be up to 100mm's apart. If it is done properly you should have around 80mm's of tension left, so if one of the kids climbed on it and stretched it you could re tension it.
We have the BCA at work cause this is what we do so if you want me to send it to you just let me know. Stainless Wire also give's the effect that there is nothing there so just keep that in mind if you are looking to preserve a view. It looks great with timber as does glass. We are going to have glass inside our home and if we need something outside on the Alfresco area we will have wire. We now have a blog. http://allaboutthebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 5Nov 14, 2008 4:47 pm Sorry double post was cooking tea. We now have a blog. http://allaboutthebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 7Nov 14, 2008 6:40 pm We have two drawings the architect did, each with a different balustrade...don't ask me to put them on...pleeeease.....they both look good. We are going to have a lounge on the balcony so the glass would be great as a wind break, as I have already said anyway we have a little time left to decide but not much. Thanks for the opinions and keep 'em coming Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 8Nov 14, 2008 7:06 pm SuH,
Like ozkarnak and yourself, I have the exact same design decision to make. I don't think the glass cleaning is much of an issue. I've driven around to houses and none of the glass look dirty. I guess only rain hits it and if anything this would clean it. I like glass since it doesn't interrupt the view. I don't need a wind break and in fact would probably y prefer some wind on me on the days I'm most likely to want to enjoy the balcony. I like stainless steel since ... I don't know why! I do know that if I choose stainless steel, it will not be wire but solid rods. Will probably cost more but I like it. If I do choose stainless steel I have to decide between vertical or horizontal rods. Horizontal rods look nicer, but kids can climb them. I wonder what the price difference is? What to do, what to do. Cheers, Casa Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 10Nov 14, 2008 7:15 pm Casa, I would be getting rods too, square ones. Glass is probably not too hard to clean...I would have easy access to it, up and down with a squidgy thingy, hose it down...hmmmm and you are right, the days you are more likely to be on the balcony would be nice hot ones when you need a breeze...how dare you confuse me even further LOL Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 11Nov 14, 2008 7:18 pm Southies Suh, aren't you on the coast ? Isn't saltspray going to be a hassle in relation to cleaning ? Oh how I would love to be that close to the water we are on the coast Southies but it's quite a way from getting salt spray, wouldn't you say kyton (she knows where I am) AND actually our glass wouldn't be right from the ground because we have a concrete lip thingy and it wouldn't even be a full metre of glass Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 12Nov 14, 2008 7:25 pm SuH Southies Suh, aren't you on the coast ? Definately glass vote from me. There is something really nice about a house that has a well designed glass balcony IMHO of course Mrs B Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 15Nov 14, 2008 7:40 pm donuts Either would look great SuH! How old are your little ones? This would definitely sway it for me towards glass... God I love you donuts...my little ones are 22 and 26, and I only one left at home, haha. Not to say he wouldn't get the urge to jump over the balcony after a few cleansing ales but...I will probably be a .....sorry I am finding it hard to say....... nanna within about 3 years, SO I will have little ones again Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 17Nov 14, 2008 7:52 pm Now now Su - with the right breeze you would get some salt spray Seriously I think the glass only because then you really will have uninterrupted outlook to that amazing sight - and let's face it that is one of the main attractions of your location. If it's just off your master then any future little ones may not go near enough to it to worry? But I think I remember you having this big marvellous deck with a gorgeous view, so I would still stick to glass for the future grandkiddies!! I bet you can't wait till they arrive Re: Glass or Stainless Steel on Balcony 20Nov 14, 2008 8:13 pm Bite your tongue woman no need to make fun, lol.
