Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 12, 2008 4:51 pm Yes she of the "no render" club might have a teensy weensy bit of render.
Our portico has rendered blueboard pillars as standard, I'm debating whether to make them brick or keep them rendered. If I keep them as is, the render will most likely be Colourbond Monument or equivalent. A very dark charcoal colour..... will this pose problems in the same way dark paint on wood does? Is it more likely to crack? Is it likely to fade? Would it be better to go with Dune? Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Dark render on blueboard? Dark render on blueboard... will it make it more likely to crack? I really need advice... I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Dark render on blueboard? Is it ok? 4Nov 20, 2008 2:50 pm Joles
I doubt the colour will have any impact on if it will crack or not. If it cracks its a problem with the render or more importantly the structure under the render not the colour. A bad render job or an unstable pier, etc etc will crack regardless of what colour its painted. Re: Dark render on blueboard? Is it ok? 6Nov 20, 2008 3:46 pm Hi, joles
i may face the same problem - we have got two pillars on the portico area to be rendered included in promo. i did read on the paint thing that they would not allow dard paint on the exterier doors as it may peel because of teh harsh sunshine given time, but i have not thought that the render might face teh same problem? what do they use on render? sorry can't help u much but thanks for raisign the question. (i will have austral Tan for bricks, so thinking about what for the render, paperbark or..) \ nh Re: Dark render on blueboard? Is it ok? 7Nov 20, 2008 3:51 pm Joles, Maybe one way of finding out is to ask the builder if the warranty on the blueboard pillars is void if you paint them a dark colour, similar to people who paint their front doors a dark colour can void their door warranty. Re: Dark render on blueboard? Is it ok? 8Nov 20, 2008 3:51 pm Sorry, Jo - no idea!!!
BUT, nh, I can tell you that your render will be applied to bricks, not blue board. And just in case you are remotely interested, our render colour is "Time Capsule" Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Dark render on blueboard? Is it ok? 9Nov 20, 2008 4:01 pm My render is fairly dark and as for the cracking question, the render maufacturer provides a range of colours including light and dark shades, so I wouldn't expect any problems. But it isn't paint applied over the top of a cement-based render, the colour is mixed through the final coat of render.
Ours is applied to both bricks and blueboard. The manufacturer is Rockcote http://www.rockcote.com.au/index.html, but unfortunately I have no idea which product ours is. It has a really great texture though, kind of rough but smooth (which makes no sense at all....). I think it contains some kind of polymer. We also have dark paint on our front door and no mention of warranty problems was made when we chose it. Re: Dark render on blueboard? I have only heard this with a couple of building companies, it is not across the board and its over here in the West. Maybe check with the builder re painting your front door a dark colour......I am talking black or dark blue as to how or if it effects any warranties. Re: Dark render on blueboard? Is it ok? 13Nov 20, 2008 7:05 pm Make sure the paint is a solar guard Jo, or it will fade. Is it ok? 14Nov 22, 2008 12:06 pm nh Hey, Petal, thanks for the info, is your "time capsule" a wattyl solarguard colour? nh No, the product is Acratex - even though, as kek said, we were told it's Rockcote...they may be the same thing, who knows ...anyway, eventho PD use Wattyl paint for internal and external paint, the render colours are Dulux!!! A lot of them are Colorbond colours, too - like the Paperbark you're considering, so you can match your garage door to your render if you want! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Dark render on blueboard? Is it ok? 15Nov 22, 2008 2:06 pm Thanks for that info, Petal...wonder if PD changed their supplier sometime in the last year?
I want to match our letterbox to the render colour and was wondering how to go about that. The colour selection docs specify Rockcote Pinjara as the colour. Hmm... I'd almost decided to just match it to the garage and front doors instead, but I'm off to do some research now! Re: Dark render on blueboard? Our builder here in NSW has the same policy - for both painted and colourbond finishes. No warranty due to colour fading and possible warping / splitting. Re: Dark render on blueboard? Is it ok? 17Nov 22, 2008 3:09 pm Yeah no warranty on doors here with most builders if it's a dark colour.
I've been driving around and I've seen lots of blueboard with dark render and it is cracked. I'm not convinced dark render will be ok on the blueboard. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Dark render on blueboard? Is it ok? 18Nov 22, 2008 3:20 pm I think it depends on: a) what kind of render is used; and b) the climate.
Cement renders would seem more likely to crack, whatever the weather conditions, bendy polymer blends not so much. The door thing is funny - there's never been a manufacturer's disclaimer on any doors or building materials we've bought in the past. Must vary from one region to another.
