Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Nov 10, 2008 9:49 am Is "natural" mortar color redish/brown?
That's wht my builder used! and i hate the color. I was expecting "natural" to be light gray as shown in austral brick's sample walls. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: mortar color 3Nov 10, 2008 10:32 am HI Snake,
So is this the "Natural" color? Redish/brown? I didn't see any redish/brown mortar in Austral displays when they showed us samples of "natural" color. I'm in total shock! Thanks. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: mortar color 4Nov 10, 2008 2:46 pm I thought mortar colour was more determined by the cement rather than the sand.
We have cream morter for the outside walls (cream face bricks) & the inside bricks (double brick house) have the plain grey mortar as they are the red maxi bricks. Now as far as I know they are using the golden yellow looking sand for both (I was surprised by the colour of the sand) just mixing different bags of cement for each type of batch. And I say that because the yellow sand was the only pile of sand dumped here. Re: mortar color 5Nov 10, 2008 3:06 pm I had this issue with our builders, natural mortar should use the light yellow sand (edit: and grey cement) ... if mixed correctly this should be a light grey with a tinge of cream.
Our builders used a "yellow" sand that was in fact red (think Uluru). Our mortar ended up being yellow (with red/brown flecks). Six months on I still hate it, really doesn't look good with our bricks. Re: mortar color 7Nov 10, 2008 6:08 pm aaaaaaaaaaarrgggggggghhhhhhh.... i hate it!!!!
they have done the whole garage already!!! and I hate it!!! looks like an old house!!!! i'm just so mad right now!!! the only way to fix it is render the whole garage, and i dont want to do it that way. its got a very big area on the side thats on the boundary! so its a waste of so much money! and i need to maintain it every few years... and its on the neighbors boundary!!!! \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: mortar color 9Nov 10, 2008 6:39 pm we just went on site and i forgot to take pics because i'm so upset. it is definitely red. and no matter how dry it becomes, it will still be red
is there a way to fix this? its also flush finished. so i guess there's no way of fixing it... \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: mortar color 10Nov 11, 2008 6:44 am dembi_2000 we just went on site and i forgot to take pics because i'm so upset. it is definitely red. and no matter how dry it becomes, it will still be red is there a way to fix this? its also flush finished. so i guess there's no way of fixing it... Maybe ask them to rake your mortar, so that the bricks stand out more and the mortar becomes less visible. Re: mortar color 11Nov 13, 2008 9:32 pm Oh No, so sad to hear this dembi... I hope you can sort something out. Did you speak about this with your site supervisor?
I hope we don't get the same problem.. We also picked the natural mortar because our bricks have a light grey tinge to it and we are hoping the mortar will just blend in nicely. If it turns out to be red, it definitely won't blend in and i would be mad too! Does anyone have natural mortar that turned out light grey? Does anyone know what the sand's colour depends on? How can i make sure the mortar will be light grey??? Dembi, looking forward to seeing a picture of your mortar... [i]We built in Point Cook and are loving our new house. Re: mortar color 12Nov 14, 2008 11:18 am I asked around and these are the ways it can be fixed:
1. grind the mortar = very tedious, very expensive labor 2. paint over the mortar = very tedious, very expensive labor 3. render over the whole garage and plaster internally = i don't really like this solution, even it its gonna be free... too much maintenance on the render in the future 4. bring down the wall and rebuild = this is what i really want. Natural colored mortar should definitely be gray. Nowhere in this world will you find a natural mortar in red... except for my house. The builder said that it will be fixed at no expense to us. Just dont know how it will be fixed. We will see... TIP: get a pic of what u want and show it to the builder. This will make sure u get what u want. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: mortar color 13Nov 14, 2008 1:07 pm dembi_2000 Natural colored mortar should definitely be gray. At least your builder recognises there is a problem. re 14Nov 14, 2008 9:46 pm Lyn If it has only just been laid it will lighten somewhat when dry & cleaned. hey everyone, We had the same experience with our builder. The mortar was very dark grey in colour and we initially thought that the colour was the colour it was, so we called our site supervisor and he said that when it was dried up it would turn in to a white-yellowish colour mortar. The inside will still be like that and the boundary wall as well. Very annoying! grrrr... \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: re 16Nov 23, 2008 9:29 pm pringles Lyn If it has only just been laid it will lighten somewhat when dry & cleaned. hey everyone, We had the same experience with our builder.
