It is kind of a creamy colour which actually looks really good so we are very pleased! Having said that if I had discovered white mortar earlier I mightve gone with that because I think it looks great, but nevermind, we are still happy! Re: Building in SA! 4003Feb 03, 2011 9:37 pm Welcome TomCat. I imagine that will be hard knocking down your home of 20 years. I’m finding it a bit sad to be knocking down my house of 4 years. It’s where we brought my nearly 2 year old home to and has lots of memories. TashMarch, that’s such good news about your build. Look forward to some pics. I had my final builder’s interview on Tuesday and now we’re just waiting for our house to be demolished on the 21st of February. Then Fairmont will book it in to start. Re: Building in SA! 4004Feb 04, 2011 8:04 pm Hey Theresa -- that is awesome that you did your final interview!! and oooh demolishment time that would be an interesting thing to see!! Good Luck!! Sure you can start putting some pics up soon for us to look at?? Ok it is picture time ..... here is our Fairmont Monaco a week away from PCI and about 3 weeks from completion (as we still need to have our paving, tiling/carpets & curtains done after handover) This is a sneak peek at our 2nd bathroom Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Nothing exciting - just a hallway shot Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ and facing the other way Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ One of our bedroom walls -- not sure if you can see the colour but it is sort of a greyish shade Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I couldn't remember if I'd put some kitchen pics up but here it is before the painter had started... They have good communication and selections which for me is important. Cost up front was much higher than fairmont, hickies etc but once you upspec their homes they end out at about the same price. The best builder will be the one that is short on work and offers a discount on the price, and builds the house quicker ! Why are priates scary ? Because they yaargh.. Re: Building in SA! 4008Feb 09, 2011 9:54 am Yes, look forward to putting some pics up soon tashmarch. Thanks for sharing your pics. Your house looks beautiful. I actually like the hallway shot. I always thought the hallway was a feature of the house with the columns outside the theatre and sliding doors. Nice furniture you’ve purchased. Must be very exciting getting to that stage. We have our PCI this afternoon ...... getting nervous ... we have a building inspector coming with us so hopefully he doesn't find anything seriously wrong with it cos that would be devastating!! So...this time next week .. we could potentially have our keys... depending on the bank and stuff I guess.... We should be at lock up this weekend - it has flown!!! Re: Building in SA! 4013Feb 09, 2011 1:22 pm Good luck with PCI, Tashmarsh. I am another building with Fairmont and am at bricking stage (PGH Aubergine). Here's my thread if you would like pics. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36159 Re: Building in SA! 4015Feb 10, 2011 7:51 am PCI went well - we spent about two hours in the house.... a few minor bits and pieces need fixing and majority of the items we found were outside. The building inspector found a few things but nothing major but you can really tell that the builders / inspectors really do not appreciate each other .... I think the building inspectors are tough on the builders and the builders really dont like it .... some things the building inspector picks up are so minor that it probably isn't even worth getting builder to fix and we could do it ourselves and I think they do this just to p*ss of the builders. However, there are some bigger things that we'll definitely want fixing and we'll have to fight for that to be done probably. Overall, house structually sound but just needs a few minor fixes. So quite happy. Still not quite sure when we'll be in as initially building supervisor told us we'd get the keys around the 18th (so us being optimistic started booking trades) but now he's saying cos of the building inspector give him a couple of weeks!! So, we may very well have to cancel all our tradies that we've booked in. It is probably our fault as we should have realised that this would be the case. Lesson to be learnt for all you guys coming up to handover ---- dont book tradies until you have those hot little keys as you'll possibly have to cancel them ALL which is quite sad Does anybody know anyone who can do the driveway crossovers? We are really really struggling to find someone to do this as no one wants to do a "small job" and they all seem to be extremely busy. It is becoming urgent as obviously we wont be able to move in until this is done..... if you have had it done or have concretor friends/relatives would be great!! Re: Building in SA! 4016Feb 10, 2011 11:05 am Good to hear that PCI went well for you tashmarch. Sounds like it was worthwhile having a building inspector there. It’s good just to get everything fixed by the builder. You’ve got enough other things to organise as you get ready to move in. It’s a shame that you’ll be delayed in moving in though. I imagine it must be hard to know when the time is right to book the tradies. Not sure about driveway crossovers. I’m a bit clueless to know what they even are. Guess I’ll work it out when I get to that stage. AFM, I’ve started my own building thread It's still a few weeks before my build starts so there's not much in it yet. Re: Building in SA! 4017Feb 11, 2011 10:23 pm As there are a number of people here building at Golden Grove, I wonder if you would mind sharing footing costs? Were they estimated reasonably correctly or underestimated? Our block has been heavily retained in one corner but we should be able to build on part of the land that has less fill. We will probably build the garage separately also, so that the house can go a bit further up the block. Also, could someone advise me how to change my signature to the thread link please? https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Building in SA! 4018Feb 12, 2011 9:38 am hi all, new here and just starting to investigate the building process. Having not yet read the 200+ pages, can anyone provide me with advice... I'm looking at the House & Land packages from World Concept or Hickenbotham. Anyone had any experiences, good or bad? Also, I see from the first few pages that I've read so far that the building seems to take a while... it's looking like average time from contract to keys is about 18-20 months - would that be right? Not sure I like the idea of waiting for so long (especially since it'll be this time next year when I'll be able to get mortgage pre-aprroval) Anyhow - any hints/tips/tricks that can be sent this would would be really appriciated! Building in SA! 4019Feb 13, 2011 4:20 pm Hi, Just wondering if anyone has used an independent building inspector whilst building with Fairmont and what was your experience? Can anyone please recommend a building inspector for Golden Grove, South Australia? Thank you Michael and Kylie Re: Building in SA! 4020Feb 13, 2011 5:02 pm magikalcrab Having not yet read the 200+ pages, can anyone provide me with advice... I am by no means as experienced as many on here, however, I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. We are looking at Hickinbotham, but house only not package. There is an extensive Hickinbotham thread on here worth looking through. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=8586 Otherwise, the main thing I know is to research, ask lots and lots of questions and make sure you compare apples with apples. Something worth remembering is that Foundation costs in SA can be a huge surprise. We are going to be paying about $21k extra for ours, many more I have heard of go up to $30 and above. Some builders charge excessively, so make sure that all foundation costs are covered in your contract or you may be in for a nasty surprise. Another thread worth looking at is the one on the things you forget. Lots of useful tips there, with nicely compiled summary. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=5823 I know what you mean about the long lead time. We are hoping to be in by the end of the year, but there is too much territory to get in the way in the meantime. Council alone could be 3 months worth of waiting, before anyone even sets foot on the block! All the best with your decision, let us know how it's going along!
