I have been reading through the forum for quite a few months now and thought i'd join in now that we are about to build. We purchased a block of land last year at the Bluestone Estate in Mount Barker and finally picked a house design we liked. We signed the contract last week and are very excited . We are building the Sorrento design with Fairmont (with minor adjustments). We have gained many helpful tips by reading through the posts and look forward to following everyones progress as well as updating you with ours. Re: Building in SA! 1629Mar 21, 2010 6:27 pm Welcome Timbo! Great to see new people on here. I don't post much but not much to post at this stage. Once we have picked out all our colours and some action happens i will list them and put up some pictures but for now its just the waiting stage. Good luck with your build! Re: Building in SA! 1630Mar 21, 2010 6:40 pm orangepool Hello~~ we just signed the contract yesterday for a vacant land in Croydon. Anyone is building a untraditional house like ours? because the land is 24m long for the front site... We probably will choose Hick%^botham~~~any good tips? Thanks !! Hi Orangepool I wonder if we are going to be next door neighbours... Stegosaurus Re: Building in SA! 1631Mar 21, 2010 6:46 pm somewoman welcome orangepool =) Only tip I have with hicks is not to use them if you want to make too many changes to their original design. We went through quite a lot with them only to have them make excuse after excuse as to why they couldn't do many things that we had asked for - despite many of those things being printed in their glossy green cred brochure. We walked away and found someone else willing to build what we wanted. Hicks left us with the taste that they advertise a bunch of abilities to get the kudos based on the theory that it costs too much to do, so nobody will actually ASK for it. I've heard good things about them if you stick mostly to standard, though. Hoff - grats!!! You'll see some action before you know it! Thank you soooooooooooooooo much !!! now we need to think about it......the problem is our land is untraditional, other builders told us they would design us own house, yet after half a month...nobody contact us...but Hicks got one plan fits, and the sales is really nice... that's why we were about to sign the contract.......sigh...... 3rd property but 1st home March 19,2010 signed contract Re: Building in SA! 1632Mar 21, 2010 6:48 pm stegosaurus orangepool Hello~~ we just signed the contract yesterday for a vacant land in Croydon. Hi Orangepool I am about to start building in Croydon on a block that is 22 metres wide - I wonder if we are going to be next door neighbours...I am in William St... Stegosaurus Hi how excited!!! we are in Harriet St.nearby!!! have you got a builder?? 3rd property but 1st home March 19,2010 signed contract Re: Building in SA! 1633Mar 21, 2010 7:00 pm Hi Orangepool,
I know your block! Are you hoping to find a design to suit your block or do you want to design the house yourself? Stegosaurus Re: Building in SA! 1634Mar 21, 2010 7:07 pm stegosaurus Hi Orangepool, I know your block! OK there aren't that many vacant blocks in Croydon... I am building with Marshall Thompson. My land is in the Historic Conservaton Zone (suspect yours might be too??) that, combined with the wide frontage and shallow depth of the block, meant that I needed to find a builder that could do a custom build that would suit the block and satisfy Council's heritage advisers. I've got to admit I didn't actually do much research before I signed the contract so I haven't got any advice to offer re Hickinbotham - I just preferred MT's display homes to others, knew they could do a custom build and found them really helpful. I haven't regretted the decision yet - but I haven't started building yet. Are you hoping to find a design to suit your block or do you want to design the house yourself? Stegosaurus HI, we actually just went to parafield garden last week ... didn't see MT...not many choices...some of our friends built with sterling and recommend us ... but within those builders only Hickins' sales found us a plan which fits our land and she rang the council on Mon. Those who said they would design us a house never showed up again then...... 3rd property but 1st home March 19,2010 signed contract Re: Building in SA! 1635Mar 21, 2010 8:06 pm Orangepool The most useful advice I can offer is talk to the Council planning team yourself (before cooling off ends) about what you can build on your block, given the zoning and be prepared to invest in a facade. Good luck Stegosaurus Re: Building in SA! 1636Mar 21, 2010 8:28 pm stegosaurus Orangepool The most useful advice I can offer is talk to the Council planning team yourself (before cooling off ends) about what you can build on your block, given the zoning and be prepared to invest in a facade.
