We are building in Mawson Lakes and after many months of inaction, they've started site-works and have poured the slab yesterday! I will try to keep my blog up to date with all the latest news and photos. Happy building! Re: Building in SA! 288Feb 24, 2009 8:17 pm Congratulations, the slab is the first time you feel you really have something solid. Re: Building in SA! 289Feb 25, 2009 10:22 pm Well got some good news yesterday.... we received our approved plans back from council
The builder called me this morning to let me know that they have also received the info from council and have now sent the plans off to the certifier. She said this generally takes 2-3 weeks and we should have a slab 4-6 weeks after that...... hopefully there is no hiccups in between My birthday is just after easter so I'm hoping for a slab as a birthday present....... could be wishful thinking but hey you never know. Re: Building in SA! 290Feb 26, 2009 8:54 am How exciting!! OMG I can't wait for our slab to get put down, then you know it is really going.
I can't wait til colour selction also then we can stop changing our minds about colour selections for the kitchen. It's doing my head in Re: Building in SA! 291Feb 27, 2009 7:37 am We are saying goodbye to our builders today. After 26mths we have had enough of all their bulldust.
At the very least we should have a slab down, but they are still messing us around with the contract. Everything that was promised too us in the beginning, they now want to charge us for. Both hubby and I are very sad and frustrated with all the time that has been wasted. Unfortunately for us after wasting so much time on one builder, we don't feel like starting all over again. So, our block will be sold There goes our dream Re: Building in SA! 292Feb 27, 2009 10:22 am Hi Everyone,
Looks like we have a few more newbies. The Gang - So sorry to hear you are having a bad time, goodluck Bates (Steven) - Like one of the other posters said there are alot of extra things that arnt in the quoted price. My house was $150k base price, it is now $240k, however we have $30k of mods included in that but about $60k extra above the base which in your case wont work. We do have alot of extra upgrades, as long as your happy with the standards then you may beable to get away with it, you would have to get them to give you a quote. On my front, we just received a coutesy phone call from Statesman, they said our engineers report was done and that it has gone to costing, so hopfully only a few days away. Yay! Next selections OMG thats going to be painful lol. Our shed is ready too just have to go and pay the last payment and organise a time for delivery! Re: Building in SA! 293Mar 02, 2009 12:30 pm Has anyone built with Hickenbotham?
Any feedback would be great! Cheers! Re: Building in SA! 294Mar 02, 2009 4:55 pm Hi Astroboy,
Hickinbotham and Statesman are the same company. I'm not sure if there are many people building with Hickinbotham at the moment but there are a fair few of us building with Statesman. We're only at council approval stage so far so can't really help with the actual building side. Their administration seems to be lacking. At the start I was getting letters that were dated 3 or 4 weeks earlier. I don't have my own 'contact' at head office so when I call you seem to get hand balled from one department to the next because the receptionists seems to have no idea what they are doing. Probably best to do a search using the link above and see what comes up. Re: Building in SA! 295Mar 03, 2009 10:15 am Well it's getting close for us as we had our builders interview yesterday, while we were stressed at making the decisions it was all pretty smooth (took about 3-1/2 hours)
One thing I mentioned before was the colour of the front door, we wanted it ironstone (black) and we thought we could sign a "waiver" to say we take responsibility if it warps but they won't do it at all in a dark colour, we have to do it ourselves , seem a bit silly as the door is under the front verandah and it faces South! Re: Building in SA! 296Mar 07, 2009 11:40 am Astroboy11 Has anyone built with Hickenbotham? Any feedback would be great! Cheers! Hey, im new to these forums, but we are building Hickis. We have had no probs(yet). We are building the San Marino Alfresco. Everyone has been really nice, Our Selections was easy and stress free, the girl was really good. We currently have the frame up and everything looks good....not long now. Let me know how you go Re: Building in SA! 297Mar 07, 2009 6:15 pm vid Well it's getting close for us as we had our builders interview yesterday, while we were stressed at making the decisions it was all pretty smooth (took about 3-1/2 hours) One thing I mentioned before was the colour of the front door, we wanted it ironstone (black) and we thought we could sign a "waiver" to say we take responsibility if it warps but they won't do it at all in a dark colour, we have to do it ourselves , seem a bit silly as the door is under the front verandah and it faces South! Same, Vid When we said "but your display homes have them..." he said she'd been told not to do them anymore. Oh well I guess it'll only take a sample tin to cover the whole door Re: Building in SA! 298Mar 08, 2009 1:35 pm hey guys i am looking for some information on owner building in adelaide, for some reason i cant find any information regarding permits for OB in SA?

My wife and I aren't far from you, over in Paringa View.
Does anyone know of any builders who use the stump foundation method? This is where steel or concrete pillars are buried deep into the block and the house then sits on top (this replaces the need for the slab). I've heard they make underhouse access/storage easier, minimise the need for earthworks and are comparable in price to the traditional method. We are forced by land encumbrances to build a split level and don't want to have to cut into the slab. I believe stumps are quite popular interstate but I am really struggling to find anyone in S.A. who offers the option. Having a unique block shape means that we really want to go with our own design as well, further complicating the search for a builder. Thankyou all for the input in this forum.
