We have an N3 wind rating for our build. (41)
Can someone tell me exactly what will be done to reach the standard required for an N3 build?
What is different from a non high wind area?
Thanks,
Jo

Thanks, Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: N3 wind rating requirements. 4Nov 02, 2008 1:53 pm The table below gives you an idea of the impact of an N3 rating...the design wind pressure is the loading you need to design the house for (don't worry about serviceability and ultimate differences that's for Gingerbeers to worry about)...the key message from the table is that going from an N1 rating (sheltered urban house) to N3 rating (exposed house) means that the design loadings approximately double.
This substantially increases the uplift forces on the roof structure...the laymans impression would be that roofs get "blown" off...there's actually a tremendous suction force exerted by the wind as it goes past the peak of the roof...combined with an increase in internal pressure within the roof structure...means the roof is "uplifted" and this is what the whole roof/ frame system is designed for. My estimate of that the means "on the ground" is: - tiles will have to be securely fastened to the battens underneath rather than just rely on their weight - roof battens may need to be stronger - roof truss will need to be stronger to resist the uplift forces - the roof truss will need stronger tie downs to the frame - the frame may need to be stronger to resist the increased forces from the roof That's a semi-educated guess at the impact of an N3 rating...no clue on dollars...some of the builders and designers on H1 may know or may be able to correct the details if needed as I don't design houses for a living.
