Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 06, 2023 10:18 pm Hello fellow home builders, I'm currently in the process of building my dream home, and I have a question regarding the choice of color for my main entrance door. I hope some of you can share your insights and experiences on this matter. My house is facing northeast, and direct sunlight hits the main entrance door during certain times of the day. I have a strong preference for a black-colored main entrance door, as I believe it would enhance the overall aesthetics of my home. However, my builder has raised a concern, stating that painting the door black might void the warranty provided for the door. I'd like to know if staining the door in black would be a viable alternative that doesn't risk voiding the warranty. Are there doors available in black color that come with a warranty? If so, could you recommend any brands or models? Additionally, I'd greatly appreciate hearing from those of you who may have faced a similar dilemma. How did you go about achieving the look you wanted for your main entrance door in a northeast-facing home with direct sunlight? Thank you in advance for your valuable insights and advice. Your experiences will be immensely helpful in making an informed decision about the color of my main entrance door. Re: Black Main Entrance Door in North East-Facing House 2Sep 07, 2023 9:13 am paint or stain wont have any marked difference in its heat absorbtion and warping risk. That said, ive had dark coloured doors in direct sun for several homes and theyve performed to acceptible levels. Ive had to have them adjusted over time to deal with the slight change in shape, but ive not had any major issues requirng a warranty or the like in over 15 years. Thats totally anecdotal though, and the risk is real. Sop proceed with that knowlede at yor own risk. That said, doors arent overly expesive you you do have trouble Re: Black Main Entrance Door in North East-Facing House 3Sep 07, 2023 11:34 am paul_di Hello fellow home builders, I'm currently in the process of building my dream home, and I have a question regarding the choice of color for my main entrance door. We had this happen 2 weeks ago where a door warped and I can confirm that black stain or paint does void the warranty of your door. Re: Black Main Entrance Door in North East-Facing House 4Sep 07, 2023 11:47 am I have seen black entrance doors bow badly, I'm talking 20mm like a banana. The door company wouldn't warrant the door even though it had been fitted their specifications. Basically they will not warrant a door that is painted in a colour with less than 50% light reflective value. Basically you take on all the risk. The door may be fine but it might also turn into a banana. Unfortunately it's a risk you will have to take if you want a dark door that is going to take full sun. Personally I'd recommend aluminium if you want a dark door. It will stay straight forever. It warped within the first week, door companies advised there was no warranty. He explained this to the client, replaced the door at his cost ( as they were jumping up and down) and they insisted on the second one being painted black as well. Off course it warped as well. The mistake he made was not explaining that black wasn't covered by warranty for the first door. Plenty of chippies would just walk away, however If you're a responsible tradie and decent person you'll only get caught like that once. After that you will be sure to tell clients that any dark colours will void warranty. I got lucky because I was the guy a client called out to replace the original door after the previous guy refused to do anything. That's when I discovered the little disclaimer in the door suppliers warranty regarding colours. If the door is going to bow it's amazing just how bad they can get. Funny thing is they can bow then straighten out at night only to bow again the next day.
