Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 23, 2023 5:04 pm I'm looking for recommendations from people who have used building inspectors for their build in Melbourne. Re: Building inspector recommendations - Melbourne 3Feb 20, 2024 11:38 am I ended up using New Home Inspections. No great complaints, no great praise either. This isnt't to imply NHI was one of these: When asking around, I found they are largely the same; they all bag each other's qualifications, tell you why X qualification the other company has is useless but theirs is better.
So are they worth getting still? yeah Is it a bloody rip off, should they do mose for the insane amount of money they do? Absolutely. If you have the need to secretly time your inspector on site then you have no confidence and you did not engage in good faith. I put up my qualifications and experience on a public record and I feel that is sufficient for a reasonable person to make a decision whether to engage me for an inspection or not. Those who then ask for a sample of a report are a red flag for me. I refuse because they are precisely the type of customer I don't want. Some are not worth it, it's not arrogance but my experience. Inspection engagement is more than five minutes, booking, preparation for inspection, travel to the site, time spent on site, travel back to base, photos review whilst writing a report, writing the report, verbal summary, emailed report. Typically all that will be around 4 hrs + travel expenses = $200/hr, hardly comparable with lawyers that charge $800/hr. If you did your homework then you would know that the bloke you mentioned has engineering in IT and only a diploma in construction, as for whether he ever built anything is unknown. OH&S considerations rule the maximum height the inspector will climb without scaffold or scissor lift. No one should work unsafely. I am going to be the first to admit that I enjoy watching his videos, especially when he is in NSW so I can see what the other guys are doing, although if you watch enough of his videos it's the same things over and over that he picks on: 1. Waterproofing 2. Box gutters 3. Floors that are out of level 4. Flashings 5. Cigarette butts. Luckily he doesn't see any of the chinese and lebanese boys up here! All very important. But I have noticed things he has missed, in particular some of the BAL rated stuff, but maybe thats because I have an interest. Overall it's an enjoyable experience watching him when I need to unwind. He does own a building company called Zaas Homes, there is a pretty long reddit thread about them. I genuinely hope no one starts one about me one day! Not sure what is true and untrue but it was an interesting read. Re: Building inspector recommendations - Melbourne 6Feb 22, 2024 10:29 pm I agree! He seems to miss quite a lot of items and likes to quote 2022 BCA and standards when clearly the build was under the 2019 and standards in-force at that time. Great drama, though. I have posted this before: We hired Darbecca to do every stage inspection, and I strongly recommend them to anyone that asks me. They were amazing.
