Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 26, 2023 9:18 am The first door is a solid wood door. Ie all parts of it are propper wood. Not some mix of toxic slurrypressed into shape . The veneer is to get the various designs into it. It's easier to start with a panel, cut the glass voids out, and then veneer trim on the the doors final shape around the glass and other bits to give it its design. The veneer in this case looks like propper hardwood too. The first door is the "better" door. Origin of wood? Only if you are a hippy and you can't sleep unless all your choices tick meaningless boxes. The reality is the wood's already been harvested and turned into a door. You won't be making any material differences to the environment or the industry by choosing one door over the other. It's core inside the door is made from lots of little bits of solid timber glued together, with a solid timber edging that can be planed to fit the frame and a veneer of timber over the face. The second door is a paint grade door because it is made with a mix of manufactured products that would need to be covered. The first door will be more expensive. Is it a better door? Maybe marginally. The first door is still a highly manufactured product. It's not like it is made with 4 solid pieces of timber that are jointed to make a door. Ultimately both doors are reliant on coatings, whether that be varnish or paint to give them longevity. It really comes down to the look more than anything. If you want a painted front door you may as well save some dollars and get the second door. If you want a varnished door you have to get the first one. Just make sure the door is sealed on all sides including underneath and on top so any warranty is maintained.
