Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 30, 2022 3:47 pm Hello I have to install some large steel angle lintels above some 5-6m wide commercial style windows. Due to width the lintels have to be welded to PFC beams (located in the timber wall cavity supported by SHS posts either side). They will then sit above the window supporting brick work. I’m not sure if you need to allow any clearance between angle lintel and the window itself. I see the engineering calcs have some deflection allowance with the steel beam to which the lintel is welded to. Typically the steel beams are 20mm above window height. But I don’t want to leave too much gap between the window and lintel as I’m not sure how to seal the gap later on. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Re: Brick lintels above windows 2Oct 30, 2022 7:06 pm I’d check the design deflection with the engineer. i would be less than 1/360 but not sure how much less and that is a big span. You could fix a powder coated aluminium storm angle to the lintel, free to move in front of the window. Re: Brick lintels above windows 4Oct 31, 2022 8:03 am Check the codes here for limits What's the max deflection for brickwork If you refer to various codes they'll say span/600 =6000/600 =10mm Of course if you don't mind your brickwork cracking then Span/360 = 17mm make sure the brickwork is reinforced Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Brick lintels above windows 6Nov 01, 2022 9:40 am Bricks and glass are brittle and crack easily that is why a higher value is set Why don't you ask the engineer who certified the calculations? The only way you can reduce the deflection is by reducing the span and/or load Alternately, in the denominator increase the steel section-> Ixx here Deflection equations Ask the door manufacturer about the max gap between the lintels? On 2nd thoughts hire someone local who knows what they are doing.. imo, it's not worth damaging a $10K door?
