Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 19, 2022 4:41 pm Does anyone know if the stupid rule around needing a water tank if not using gas has been rescinded in Victoria yet? Need to cut the fat on my design and if tank is not required it will have to go (toilets use bugger all water and we will not be watering gardens so not really needed). Re: Water tank requirement in Victoria 2Jul 19, 2022 11:20 pm In Victoria, a 2,000 L tank storing water from a minimum 50 sq m roof harvest area and connected to all toilet cisterns is not required if you have either: (a) Recycled water connected to the property. (b) A solar hot water heater that is gas boosted where reticulated gas is available. There was talk of allowing electric boosted solar hot water units which makes perfect sense but I don't know whether it has been introduced. I believe that heat pumps are now also an alternative but you need to confirm this. To maximise yield, you can use rainwater in the laundry and also plumb it to a HWS but you will need a well designed system that collects and supplies good quality water to the pump. 3in1 Supadiverta. Good luck with that. . Thanks. Yeah, they’re not being very clear on when the changes apply which is frustrating. But we’re going heat pump HWS so I might see if we can do that. Have a good look at the rules, if I recall correctly from when I looked into it last year for it to count a heat pump HWS must be connected to 5kw or greater solar and not be able to draw from the grid at all. I ended up with a gas boosted solar system, which will be a giant waste if they ban gas in the near future, usual government incompetence. Re: Water tank requirement in Victoria 6Jul 20, 2022 9:29 am It amazes me that they don't include solar PV as an alternative. 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: Water tank requirement in Victoria 7Jul 20, 2022 11:46 am We're going no gas, with heat pump hot water, but need the water tank as well. It's mind boggling that they think it would be better for the environment for me to connect gas to heat hot water than the set-up we're going with. Head across to Whirpool and lookup posts from AndrewRR. He has helped people out getting approval for heat pump HWS in lieu of solar HWS. Thanks Draftroom that definitely helps a heap.
