Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 29, 2022 4:49 pm Hello, We are tossing up whether to install Laminated tinted windows (Low E glass) vs added 3M film after handover. We like the safety aspect (the laminate is baked into the product so not likely to shatter if someone tries to break them) plus the low UV and heat saving aspects. The cost for our house is 15k. I haven't priced 3M film yet. Without the Laminated glazing, our house is already rated 6 in terms of energy efficiency. Any advice on whether this is necessary or a nice-to-have? Our house faces South East (in Perth). Thanks! Re: Laminated tinted windows vs 3M film 3Mar 30, 2022 3:29 pm No, not double glazed, just plain glass. Re: Laminated tinted windows vs 3M film 4Mar 31, 2022 11:20 am whether it's necessary or not really depends on your priorities, the house layout as well as the height/position of the properties around you. not having those things won't make your house unlivable, but it might increase the cooling/heating costs and/or make certain areas of the house uncomfortable in summer. Low-E works only on radiant heat, and is best suited to areas which may overheat due to solar heat gain - it won't keep heat in. But any form of external shading is far more effective. We like the safety aspect (the laminate is baked into the product so not likely to shatter if someone tries to break them) The security offered by laminated glass is only as good as the security of the glass at its edge, in other words, if the laminated glass is not secure, it can be removed by attaching a sucker and pulling the whole sheet out. NB I asked about double glazing because it is inadvisable to fit film to double glazed units. The main advantage is UV protection for internal furniture/flooring and since it's baked in the product and sandwiched between 2 glass sheets, the different thickness also offers better acoustic filtering. To be honest, I would try to get double glazing first before you try fancy glass. If you are concerned about security, you would need to upgrade the thickness of the glass and the laminate layer. The problem with 3M is over time it can degrade. Also this layer has to be installed internally usually and does not offer any security. bec of more thickness and underlay i prefer laminate. also my builder covers laminate only. 2 18413 It sounds like you have an issue with window installation tolerances and how the roller adjustment is affecting the… 2 10946 ![]() From the image, it appears that the window head flashing is not installed correctly.
