Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 17, 2022 9:24 pm So we got our updated Kitchen layout back today and it has been changed a bit from the original version. It appears the measurements have been done onsite now and from what I can see there has been a variance to the door location for the butlers pantry. This small change has now seemed to have put our kitchen layout completely out. Builder is currently looking into it but thought I would get some advise from others what they think should be happening? Is it considered extreme to want the door moved to where it is located on the plans? Hopefully the photos will show what I mean, it appears the kitchen company may not have picked up why the wall is now shorter as the pantry door is still in the same place but the wall that would go toward the powder room is shorter. It is on the far right which shortens the wall the rangehood/oven and cooktop is on. This seems to really mess up our layout we decided on and can't really work out a way it works if left this way?? As the butlers pantry has shelving on that side of the wall that now can't be there as it would be in the way of the door? It would also mean the island is now over hanging infront of the door also.... Re: Options for door placed incorrectly? 3Mar 18, 2022 9:18 am Jason526 Can't you swap the positions of cavity and door on that pantry sliding door? Doesn't look like a big job for the carpenter. I would assume it wouldn't have been to big of a job at the point the photo was taken, however it wasn't picked up until the kitchen people went in to measure it seems. I myself didn't notice it at the time. This is a slightly older photo but my understanding is the gyproc and door frames and all that has been put up so would be a bit more of an involved job to do that? I really don't understand why the door wasn't put in the way you suggest in the first place. Still waiting to hear back from the builder to see what they say, but I assume they won't want to move the door as it would be the most costly. First time building from scratch for us so I just wonder is it considered excessive if we want the door moved how it is laid out on the plans? As I wouldn't have thought it would be that big of a deal but it now effects the kitchen layout alot and I don't like how small the oven joinery now looks. Sorry builders, you made an error and it needs to be fixed. The plans form part of the contract and cant be varied without your approval. I say this with all sincerity. This is your dream home and you are the client. The kitchen is such an integral component in the home, you need to get it right. The second plan was horrible. As builders we all make mistakes from time to time. Sometimes those mistakes turn out for the best but other times like this they affect the whole functionality of the kitchen. And honestly from a building perspective, reframing a door and some new gyprock is pretty basic. They should be able to get the carpenter to fix the framing for free as it was his mistake, and that just leaves a small amount for the gyprocker. Re: Options for door placed incorrectly? 8Mar 18, 2022 7:27 pm Just thought I would update, as I asked the builder about this the night before. They got back to me this afternoon to say this will be fixed as per the plans which is good as I thought I may have to fight a little to get this outcome. But without even needing to be poked that was the outcome. Re: Options for door placed incorrectly? 9Mar 18, 2022 8:33 pm As they should have. It was always their fault and ultimately had no option but to change it to what the plans show. It would have been interesting to see just how far they would have let the build go before rectifying the issue if you didn't bring it to their attention. Sounds like the supervisor was asleep at the wheel. To be honest I think it may have gone all the way if we had accepted the new kitchen layout, as I don't think anyone noticed the door was different. It's only when the joinery guys went in to measure they found the wall was shorter. But I have a feeling they didn't know why it was different to the original measurements as the pantry door is still in the same place but the right of the wall is shorter in their diagram, would have thought if they knew the door in the diagram would be shown to be more over. I personally think pivot door are over the top, as you said a bit impractical having a small useless section and poor insulation.
