Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 02, 2011 10:53 am Got a nice surprise when I got home yesterday (not!!) We received a water bill for $243.20 and we haven't even started building yet! We've owned the land since June and this is the first bill we have received. Has anyone else had this happen - I'm going to phone SA Water and ask for an explanation - guess who's going to win the argument though! Just venting as it's good to share! Re: SA Water - Not happy Jan! 2Feb 02, 2011 11:00 am I'm sure SA Water will issue a credit. We had a similar issue with Yarra Valley Water here in Melbourne. We recieved bills with sewerage disposal charges We'd only just got the portaloo on site and were months and months off having a flushable toilet in the house... They credited the charges. Just keep an eye on the bill, and make sure you only pay what is relevant to your site. Mclaren Got a nice surprise when I got home yesterday (not!!) Re: SA Water - Not happy Jan! 3Feb 02, 2011 11:05 am I thought it was normal. We have always paid water supply on our block.Ours id only the supply charges, no usage. Re: SA Water - Not happy Jan! 4Feb 02, 2011 11:10 am You will see why I am angry - the bill we received starts with a previous balance of $121.60 which we hadn't never been informed of before, I accept the quarterly supply charge and the SAVE THE RIVER MURRAY LEVY but not the Quarterly Minimum Charge of $77 - we only used $21 in our last house which had a huge garden!! Sounds like a blatant rip off to me! For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: SA Water - Not happy Jan! 5Feb 02, 2011 12:44 pm Yes we're stuffed! I didn't read the bill properly - the $77 is for sewerage which we won't be using for months!!! LOL Don't you love all the hidden costs of the building process and we haven't even started yet For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: SA Water - Not happy Jan! 6Feb 02, 2011 2:42 pm If you haven't had the sewage connected, then you can get a rebate. Because we're knocking down a house and the meter is going to stay, Yarra Valley Water told me I could claim the sewage charges back if the builder wrote a letter telling when it had been connected. Re: SA Water - Not happy Jan! 7Feb 02, 2011 2:45 pm I don't have high hopes as I was told that we have to pay it when I phoned but I'll give them a try! Re: SA Water - Not happy Jan! 8Feb 02, 2011 2:54 pm Just checked the website "Sewerage rates are payable on any land that can be connected to a sewer main, whether or not the property is connected to the sewerage system" and I really hate that the cost of flushing your toilet is based on how much the valuer-general says your house is worth regardless of how big it is, how many toilets you have, etc etc. Okay finished my rant for today.
