Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 06, 2022 1:37 pm Hello, I'm sourcing the materials for subfloor. The posi truss specced floor sheets in 19mm thickness so it's up to me to choose either plywood or yellow tongue for subfloor. Any experience from your point of view which one should be better for my double-story house? While I try to save budget for materials also want to balance the durability. The yellow tongue is 2.5 times cheaper than plywood. But will it be worth saving $$$ on a 160sqm first-floor area concerning the strength and durability of the subfloor? Any recommendation is highly appreciated. Cheers LT Re: Particleboard Yellow Tongue or Plywood for subfloor 3Feb 06, 2022 11:53 pm Yellow tongue, just make sure to glue and screw the flooring down. You can do two layers even at that price which will give a very solid floor. We have been using double layers of yellow tongue is several of our recent builds and the feeling it gives is fantastic, so great advice! Re: Particleboard Yellow Tongue or Plywood for subfloor 5Feb 07, 2022 1:58 pm Thanks all so much. It sounds like I got 2 votes for double layers of yellow tongue. However, the posi truss that I ordered specs 19mm sheet flooring, if I use double layers then it's 19x2=38mm thickness, could be an issue? Re: Particleboard Yellow Tongue or Plywood for subfloor 6Feb 07, 2022 2:24 pm You should go back to your supplier. The floor system has a load calculation of live and dead loads. Dead loads = static items like the floor sheeting, the load of a bearing wall, walls etc etc, Live loads = people, furniture moveable objects. Just confirm the double sheet is fine "in writing" this way it is covered under the product warranty. Any deflection, movement etc can't be advised as not supplier problem as you have overloaded the floor system due to double sheets. Plus if your certifier is switched on, on seeing a double floor he/she should ask if it has been approved by the frame/floor/truss supplier We are Expert Consultant's, and we are here to help. Tranlan Just thinking, the alternative is to switch the yellow tongue out for blue tongue or red tongue if you want something more robust. Just double check with your engineer first that he is fine that joist sizes & spacings will accomodate the double option. They generally design a fair bit of tolerance in. I checked with my truss supplier and they said it's ok they can change the design towards loading double sheets for posi truss. However, I need to check with the engineer since there are other important steel members (posts and beams) + timber frames bearing loads under the posi truss. All the best Simeon Thanks Simeon, that's a good option too, actually, red tongue is recommended by my carpenter Plus definitely need to check with the engineer about using double sheets. Jimbo73 I would use heaps of adhesive on each sheet and screw rather than nail. use as many as you like cheers Simeon 1 4064 Hi guys, I want to do some floor levelling before laying the planks and am considering doing it with self-levelling or yellow tongue PB board. I am wondering which one… 0 6538 XCEM Alpha flooring seems to relatively new and I could not found any reviews. Have you or someone you know have used it and would recommend over other subfloor options?… 2 7590 |
