Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jan 12, 2022 7:54 pm Hello My building inspector has just submitted me a report that tells me that “a 62mm bearing to the living room window lintel was noted. Lintels are defective if not installed in accordance with (a table he inserted which reads that over 1.5m span my lintel bearing should be 150mm”. Would someone be so kind as to explain this to me? What exactly is the consequence of a lintel 88mm out? Thanks Re: Lintels and things 2Jan 12, 2022 8:26 pm The steel lintel has to sit on the bricks either side of the opening. The engineering details specify the size of the lintel and bearing of lintels for each opening so that full structural strength is achieved. With inadequate bearing the lintel and wall as a unit doesn't have it's structural integrity as required by the engineering details. The structural steel suppliers should allow for the opening and bearing as per the engineering details. The bricklayers then have to put the correct lintels in the appropriate place. It sounds like one of those steps has been incorrectly done. The section of wall will need to be pulled down and the appropriate sized lintel installed and then rebricked. Sounds like the supervisor has dropped the ball. I noticed your house a couple of weeks back when I was driving past. It's a nice suburb. Thanks. This makes sense. Yeah, it’s a nice suburb but I still think it’s overpriced! Lucky for me I’m not going to be selling any time soon so won’t be too badly affected by the inevitable value drop that I’m convinced is heading our way!
