My main question is. - I have a completed granny flat on my property that will be out of the way of the actual area of construction. Would there be an option for me to live there during the construction period? I have even come up with the idea I could actually make an access point in my neighbor's fence so I can leave the area without having to go near the construction area. If i was able to get all the relevant connections made to keep the flat up and running and avoid the construction site would this be possible? Rather than me having to move and pay for another property for the duration? If anyone can guide me it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Simon. Hi Simon I hope you don't mind me adding my two cents to this thread as it's a really interesting question you pose. So, in my opinion the answer to your question depends on what style of builder you choose. If you choose a project home builder I think there is only a small chance that you will be able to live onsite as they use the HIA or MBA contracts and you effectively grant them exclusive access rights to your property, as they don't want you on their buildings sites. Now, it should be a simple process to carve your granny flat out of that contract nominated building area and if there is a safe access route to the granny flat, carve that out as well, you would do this by preparing a plan that would be annexed to the contract along with some special conditions. Having said that, you might struggle to find a project home builder who is willing to work with you as they are running sausage making factories and don't do well with anything unusual. On the other hand, custom builders are used to be flexible so you would have no issues. We sometimes do renovations with people living in their homes, not fun but hey, you do what you have to do. So my advice is, yes it is possible, you just have to find a builder who is prepared to be flexible with your needs. Simon Just to chime in - you can absolutely live in your granny flat - I am doing exactly that as I type! I just negotiated it with my builder. In today’s market with extended delivery times it’s the best decision I have made during this whole building journey!
