Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Feedback on dining, family, kitchen 5Oct 19, 2021 10:38 am I would add a big window to the family room. The two small windows are there so you can put the TV between them, I would put the TV on the internal wall. Leave the window in the dining, because it is always nice to look into the back yard and not at a wall. Your dining room is 5.98m long which seems huge. I would reduce it by a metre and make the outdoor area bigger by a metre. I would also look at extending the roofline out by a metre to create more eave and pave underneath. This will help with the western sun also. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Feedback on dining, family, kitchen 6Oct 19, 2021 11:26 am Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. I was always leaning towards moving the big Dining window to the Family and removing glazing completely from the West side. Don't want to get all that summer heat and glare, as it is a huge window. I do like jason526 idea of using the Dining as the Family instead given the area is similar in size, and placing the TV on the south wall. We just never thought about it until you mentioned it. Do you guys think that the South Dining wall need some windows? We're undecided on that one... just unsure if it'll be too dark if i close the west wall completely. In regards to the Outdoor Living, we were thinking of extending it out a metre towards the fence on the the North. Really appreciate the feedback. Personally, I wouldn't change the dining and family rooms. The dining room is 5.98m long and 3.55m wide before you run into the kitchen island. It would feel very narrow for a family room. The family room is 4.88m wide and 6m long before you run into the kitchen island. Even allowing for stools at the bench, you will have 4.88m x 5m for the family room. If you extend the paving of the outdoor room to the gutter on the north, that will add .45 to .6m (depending on the depth of your eaves) without any extra cost to the building itself. if you extend 1m out to the west and pave to the gutter, that will add an extra 1.5m of living space along the western wall and give more overhang (shade) into the dining room. Having a window on the western wall looking into the garden will be beautiful for most of the day (until about 3pm) when you can close the blinds and then enjoy the outdoor view after dark. You could even tint the windows on the western wall. Up to you if you want to put a window on the southern wall, it would be a nice place for a buffet to go. I wouldn't get rid of the west window of Dining either if it looks into your backyard. Blinds can fix summer sun glare. If it's a single level house, you can extend out the roof. If it's a double story house, I like the idea from bestspecials. Build a bigger outdoor living deck wrapped around the west side. And have a roof over it. You can consider those motorised open-shut style roof. 2 17842 Your situation is a classic trade-off between energy efficiency (BASIX 7-star compliance) and aesthetic/functionality (maximizing… 2 5648 ![]() Thanks , we decided to go with them now in the process of designing, yes I agree they are super flexible with design and super flexibility with our needs , anyway one… 2 47781 |
