Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 17, 2008 7:07 pm Hmmm... I'm looking at further ways to spend money I don't have.
In the plan I'm looking at there will be a sliding door from the dining to the outdoor room and one from the living to the outdoor room. Like this... http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u353/joles_photo/Floorplan_Promenadealteredagain-2.png We can remove the corner pillar and make it so that the doors join in the corner. This means the whole space can then be opened up. I'm hoping to hear from anyone that has this set-up or anyone with an opinion on this set-up. From memory I think Rachelle is having something similar. Even though it looks great... when it comes to it, how often will the doors actually be opened up. Is it a fancy idea that doesn't work practically? Everyone's opinion is appreciated. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 3Oct 17, 2008 7:20 pm I think from past threads it costs much moola as the builder needs to support the corner with something to replace the structural corner pillar? We have twin sets of bifolding doors instead with the pillar still in the corner in our plans - figure it will open up the room just as well to our back yard without spending massive amounts (that is in excess of the door costs ) Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 4Oct 17, 2008 7:25 pm kyton I think from past threads it costs much moola as the builder needs to support the corner with something to replace the structural corner pillar? It's a really good price I think... I'm just wondering if we'll actually use it.... but as Southies said, good for parties... and I do like to party! Yep I wonder about the usage as well. I didn't really want the bi-folding doors as I have a personal hate of leaving doors open and creepy crawlies flying in. But DH really wanted them so since I am getting to make plenty of decisions about other things then it was left to him to decide.
Will be fantastic once our pool is done and we spend the majority of afternoons outside methinks. Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 6Oct 17, 2008 7:57 pm Hi Joles
I'm not sure about all the practicalities, or even structural issues that may be involved, I just think it would look fantastic and work really well in terms of opening up the house further. I saw this attached picture a little while ago and thought how fantastic it looked. I'm guessing this is what you mean by the doors meeting in the corner and being able to open up. I say go for it, but that's just me, I love that a house can open right up into the outdoors. Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 7Oct 17, 2008 8:23 pm Yep me!
It's costing around $9k to open it right up, that's for the bi-fold doors and the clear span beam. As soon as we walked into the display home we were in love. I think we'll have them open quite often, we only have a normal double door here opening onto our balcony and I always have it wide open with the curtains open so I imagine that in our new home we'll have it open a lot. One real advantage is that our meals room kind of feels like it's outside when the doors are open so that we might use the alfresco for a big outdoor suite like the display home and just use the indoor dining table for bbqs etc since it feels like it's outside. In your case your loungeroom might feel a bit exposed to the elements with the doors open. It does look fantastic doesn't it? I know that aesthetically it's the better option.... I'm just wondering if we'll actually use it a lot..... I think we'll do it.... but ours will only be sliding stackers. I'm far too uncoordinated to manage bi-folds. Jo now I just have to figure out a way to afford it... I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 11Oct 17, 2008 9:35 pm wow that corner looks fabulous. I guess it also depends on how bad the flies are where you will be living. Where we are now the flies are minimal but in our last house DH who is a tad OCD would have been driven nuts by them. Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 12Oct 18, 2008 12:12 pm Structurally its not a huge deal. It's really just a trick on the eye, because the main support is outside. If you consider you'd have no trouble having an open plan house that size, all they've done is put a door through the middle of the room instead of on the outside of the room. If that makes sense
My only concern with those doors is whether over time you will have trouble locking them. Because it is a door locking into another door at 90 degrees. It may be worth going to a display home or two and having a play with how well they open and close. It may be nothing to worry about of course! The only other thing I would consider is whether you're building in a fairly rural area. I know where we're moving there are bloody big flies. I hate flies!! Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 16Feb 11, 2009 10:39 pm i think it looks great, but id personally never use it because of the mozzies, dont you have mozzie's?
if your living extends outside a lot or if your not scared of mozzies it will definitely add some wow factor Blog - http://snakedr.blogspot.com/ Build Thread - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=12084&p=307406#p307406 Status - PCI 15/10. Things nearly done. Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 17Feb 11, 2009 10:53 pm Looks great, but $8500 can be better spent elsewhere in my opinion. A family member has this style opening out to their alfresco area. They said it's a pain in the ***, and they've opened it up maybe 3 times since the house was built - about as much as they've used their "Dining" room
I'd rather spend the $8500 on nicer furniture, appliances, extension of the alfresco area etc.. bifolds 18Feb 12, 2009 1:22 pm Personally I think they look fantastic. I just wonder can you open 1 door if you just wanted a breeze on a cool day (as you could open a sliding door just a small amount) or do you have to open them all up? So they are all open or all closed. I chose a double slider instead but I do love the bifold look. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 19Feb 12, 2009 4:14 pm Jo, did you end up going for this option?
How much did they quote you? Is it timber or alum? I wanted the bi-fold unit in timber, but CH dont do those units in timber, only alum. And they are charging us $7300. Do you think that's a good price. The $9k that Rachelle spent, was that for timber ro alum? Idiots are fun, that's why there is one in every village! - Dr. House - Re: Removing the pillar between doors? 20Feb 13, 2009 2:22 am You know, I think I like it WITH the pillar in the middle better - but Rachelle's house looks awesome without it, so I guess it comes down to whether you would actually use it After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Looking to tile the facade pillars rather than rendering. Builder is quoting 2500$ laying cost for upto 10msq. The 2 pillars come to be 16msq. So laying costs are 5000$… 0 7524 get them to replace the chipped tiles. It will stick out like a sore thumb overwise. Also tiler will be siliconing the miters rather than grouting. Grouted miters crack… 1 4031 Hi, have purchased a house with 2 single garage doors. The Centre pillar one side sits proud to the other. Can I change 2 doors into one. Please see picture. 0 6335 |
