I just have a vague memory of something happening in Canberra, about 10 - 12 years ago, where houses that were found to contained asbestos (in house? or land?), were fenced off, and declared to be "unsafe" and the government took over the houses (i think they compensated the owners for it), but the owners had not say over this, and were forced to hand over to the government for 'remediation works'.
