Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 17, 2021 8:38 am Hi All! I've attached some photos of Big M's interesting workmanship on the fixing. We had rocked up to walk through, there's gaps in architraves everywhere, a couple of the window frames got blasted with the acid wash because they didn't close the windows.... Should I make a song and dance about this? I don't want the house held together with bog, nor it to all split later down the track. It honestly looks like first day DIY work, not a professional trades work. We've already been delayed and now are under the pump big time. http://imgur.com/a/1pNrbmg Re: An example of interesting workmanship with Big M should 2Sep 17, 2021 8:44 am That is very very average, I wouldn't put up with that and I don't think you should be either. Probably you're biggest single investment in you're life and they give you that quality. Re: An example of interesting workmanship with Big M should 3Sep 17, 2021 8:52 am Recommend you investigate beyond these symptoms. Your pics suggest the walls are not straight and the slab is not level. The rectifications necessary may be more than cosmetic filler and paint. Re: An example of interesting workmanship with Big M should 5Sep 17, 2021 8:57 am Oh interesting, I did think of that, but we've had private inspector go in at lockup, they should've picked that up? Apparently there are tolerances with the slab, but I'm not sure with the walls? Re: An example of interesting workmanship with Big M should 6Sep 17, 2021 9:26 am some of that is atrocious, some it it not so much. Overall its below average. splashes from the wash probably wont be much an issue after its painted. But the Arcs are effd. Re tolerances, read the guide and understand it. The wording in it can sometimes work in your favour. My favourite is the term from a "normal viewing position". They will try to use that in really creative ways, espcially whenit comes to paint work defects, but if you can see it without using a torch for glancing light or your face pressed against the wall, it snormal viewing position. If you can se eif from several spaces in the room, it really drives the point even further. Plumbness of walls is great too and easy to check, deviation of skirtings etc also easy to measure and check against the tolerances. 99% of the time, if you can see it, its out of tolerance. Again read the guide and understand it. Dark matter scientist, can breathe underwater, mind reader and can freeze matter just by willing it. Trust me, its in my sig. Where would I find those guidelines, might go grab a level, and just walk around the place. We've had pre plaster QA from the builder, and our own private. Re: An example of interesting workmanship with Big M should 8Sep 17, 2021 9:50 am Check it youself. Every floor, wall, ceiling, door, niche etc. Read the standards guide, understand it. Tools required are step ladder, 2m straight edge level, window packers, ruler, carpenters square, good torch. Document and photograph every defect. The often used builders visual excuse does not justify measurements and angles out of tolerance. Standards are standards. Re: An example of interesting workmanship with Big M should 9Sep 17, 2021 11:06 am No it's not how it should look, but the guide to standards and tolerances will clarify. Sometimes things can look bodge but be within tolerance. Most of the time though they are not though. The builder relies heavily on you not reading or understanding the guide or themselves coming up with an interpretation that they try to push (which is usually incorrect). You can find it online by googling for it. It's litterally called "guide to standards and tolerances" Great little document. Dark matter scientist, can breathe underwater, mind reader and can freeze matter just by willing it. Trust me, its in my sig. Building Standards; Getting It Right! Hi, yes, we have the report. The builder has rectified the items on the report and we’re moving forward with the build. Thanks for reaching out 2 2925 i imagine you also have another contract with an architect? and yeah, whatever other's said about special conditions and appendices 16 16026 |
